STAR CITY 2040 - It’s the year 2040 in Star City and Mia Queen has everything she could have ever wanted. However, when Laurel and Dinah suddenly show up in her life again, things take a shocking turn and her perfect world is upended. Laurel and Dinah are tracking a kidnapping victim with direct ties to Mia and they need her help. Knowing it will change everything, Mia can’t help but be a hero and she, Laurel and Dinah suit up once again to save the city.
The episode will serve as a backdoor pilot for a Green Arrow & The Canaries. The burning question is: Will Mia go back in time to take Oliver’s seat in the Hall of Justice?
I got a bit distracted trying to figure out exactly which version of Laurel Lance we were getting, especially after Dinah revealed she didn’t seem to exist at all post-Crisis. Laurel could have been the original Laurel who avoided being killed by Damien. Maybe she was pre-Crisis Earth-2 Laurel continuing on in this post-Crisis universe. Or maybe some combination of both. She eventually referred to herself as “Black Siren”, so I take it she’s the same one last seen pre-Crisis on Lian Yu right before the red skies appeared.
I rather liked this backdoor pilot. Future post-Crisis Star City is very bright, very shiny, with a hidden, corrupt undercurrent that’s never gone away; it’s rather cyberpunk, or maybe post-cyberpunk. It’s a pretty cool setting, much better than the craptastic future pre-Crisis city.
I was happy to see future Zoe is still alive post-Crisis. How long before she gets roped into the Canary Network? And what’s up with Connor? For that matter, you know William is going to be manning the Clocktower.
I was also happy to see future JJ to be a good guy, engaged to Mia, no less; Diggle must have leveled-up his child-rearing skills post-Crisis. And then some bad guy came to restore JJ’s pre-Crisis memories. I’m not sure I entirely agree with Cisco’s magic Martian memory mender. I understand that it moves the plot along, but it’s a bit of a cop-out. Couldn’t the writers have contrived to initiate JJ into the Deathstroke gang in some other fashion?
STEPHEN AMELL SIGNS OFF AS THE GREEN ARROW; EMILY BETT RICKARDS RETURNS FOR THE SERIES FINALE OF “ARROW” - After eight seasons, and the launch of countless superheroes, the series wraps up the story of the Green Arrow. Emily Bett Rickards returns as Felicity.
One wonders how they’ll conduct a series finale when the main character is already dead. Probably a lot of reminiscing at the funeral, and a lot of flashbacks.
Note that the episode will be preceded by a series retrospective. (So, more reminiscing from the cast.)
Nice that they brought in Barry, Kara and both Al Ghuls
The pre show was a bit hyperbolic “most ground breaking show ever” (ok now I’m being hyperbolic)
It just occurred to me: We’ve been using the term “Arrowverse” for years, and now, given Oliver’s role in restoring the universe, it’s actually appropriate.
A very ok ending to a very ok season. The best part was Diggle’s ending. I haven’t heard any rumors of David Ramsey being on Superman and Lois, but it was setup.
So many headscratchers in this one. I can understand not bringing back Robert Queen, since his death is what set off Oliver’s whole journey, but weren’t Moira and Tommy’s deaths equally impactful? Poor Shado was also forgotten. And Oliver didn’t even bother giving Roy his arm back.
As series finales go, this one rated a solid “meh”. Not great, not terrible.
I always questioned what made Oliver Queen so inspirational. I question it because the way he was written, he was an asshole most of the time. Diggle, Curtis, and to a lesser extent Felicity, were the only team members who weren’t assholes, though Diggle had a few moments of his own. The show keep telling us here was an inspiration, but they almost never showed it. Flash, Supergirl, and Black Lightning show me inspirational leaders. I understand why people get behind them. Not Arrow.
