Art Neville was the creator of the Neville Brothers group and was a fixture in the New Orleans music scene for a long time. Article.
RIP buddy; you done so much good it’s hard to believe it all.
I consider myself a lucky soul to have seen both The Meters and the Neville Brothers live, more than once. RIP, Poppa Funk…
Lucky just to have heard them. I got to see The Meters once, but never the Neville Brothers.
Charles died a little more than a year ago. Wonder how Aaron and Cyril are holding up.
Dang, I saw Art and the Nevilles twice in Tokyo in 1991. Great shows. Aaron didn’t make the second show, but Dr. John was pulled in, so I saw the Neville Brothers do two very different shows on two different nights.
In complete seriousness, this is the biggest single loss to the unique, inimitable musical culture of the Crescent City since “Pops” Louis Armstrong passed nearly 50 years ago.
Art Neville has been singled out for praise by neme by the biggest, most influential musicians in modern history, including Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones and others, and even though the average American might not have been familiar with the timeless music that Art created, people who are true music lovers understand what a true treasure he was.
Rest Easy, Papa Funk…
A grteat loss; I really like the Meters and the Neville Brothers music that I have. That should be the playlist for this evening.
But I only ever managed to see Cyril perform live. (Twice, with the Royal Southern Brotherhood)
The Neville Brothers were one of just small handful of groups that we brought to The Moon in Tallahassee with regularity back in the late 1980s and early 1990s; they always packed the house and always delivered a fantastic performance. I was fortunate enough to sit and talk with Art, Aaron, Cyril and Charlie on a number of occasions. Sometimes we’d mostly be watching basketball or football, sometimes we’d just shoot the shit. I cannot stress how amazingly laidback and cool they all were.
That period of my life was both difficult and wonderful and I now treasure those memories more than I could have known I would; those times and now many of those people are lost forever to me.
