Art School Confidential (Open spoilers)

Big disappointment, and I say this as a huge fan of both Clowes and Zwigoff. Some flaws:

–When Jerome decides to pass of Baumgartner’s work as his own, it doesn’t seem believable. Not that he’s morally above it, but the more typical attitude is “I’m a genuine genius, above petty plagiarism.” Inflated opinion of self is a crucial element of art school bullshit.

–Better satire would require approximating the actual experiences of a typical art student, like the original Eightball story did. This was just too High Concept to be effective.

Pretty much everything else was great. I’m in love with Sophia Miles, all the dialogue was spot on, and Ethan Suplee makes a great Kevin Smith.

Very watchable, just not very believable.

The first half, which I’ve described to friends as “National Lampoon’s Art School,” was inspired, funny and successful. The second half was dreck.

Minor hijack: Dan Clowes actually drew some stuff for the *National Lampoon in its latter days.
