This book on guerilla marketing always comes highly recommended. The linked version is from 2007 so it might be slightly out-of-date, but the best you’re going to do. The author has also written a book on Internet marketing which is from 2008.
My wife used to write advertorials for some businesses - they were ads in the form of articles. However the company paid the magazine to place them.
Not for a home business, but I’ve worked with PR people to place articles in trade rags. It was kind of expected that we’d buy an ad, and the articles of course had to be about the subject, not our product - though you can say things like “the problem can be solved by router software such as our product.”
I don’t know where you want to place these articles, but most magazine editors are plenty smart enough to know an ad when they see one - and expect money in one way or another.
I haven’t seen anything different in on-line versions of legit trade rags. Can you offer more details?
