I was reading this evening that an over the counter remedy for dry mouth is artificial saliva. I have looked through many drugstore aisles and have never seen anything even close to that type of thing. Has anyone seen this stuff or used it? What could artificial saliva possibly taste like? I did read several years ago that there was craze in Japan for older men to buy small bottles of saliva from teenage girls for what purpose I am not sure.
I’ve seen the artificial saliva at Walgreens, Osco, etc. at that counter of stuff that’s right under the pharmacist’s nose. Perhaps they’re afraid people are going to shoplift it?
My brother uses artificial saliva all the time because he had throat cancer and the radiation treatments permanently damaged his salivary glands. It comes in little spray bottles, but I’ve never seen where he buys it. He’s weird enough to buy it from Japanese teenage girls, but he probably just gets it at a pharmacy. As for taste, it probably doesn’t have any more than natural saliva.
It’s out there, it’s kinda gross until you get used to it (so patients have told me) but it’s better than chronically dried-up mouths and tongues, with nasty yeast infections on them, and horrid gum disease.
One patient told me at first it was like putting someone else’s spit into his mouth. But he got used to it, and appreciates what it does for him.
K-Y Jelly?
