Artist's name?

There’s a famous painting that shows a young woman laying in a field, looking off into the distance towards a house. I’ve been trying to find the name of the artist and the title of the work. Can someone please help?

“Christina’s World” by Andrew Wyeth

At least I can provide a link to an image, even if arara beat me to the punch. http://www.big-dish.co.uk/christina.htm

Well done, arara123 and bibliophage!

I have to resist the temptation to ask if anyone knows of a picture that shows (insert something naughty yourself here)…

I have a question about the painting. I remember being told that the subject (Christina) had some sort of problem which left her unable to walk. She was carried out in the field by someone who had then left. She’s looking at the house, realising how far away it is and how long and arduous of a journey it will be for her to make. Is this story true, or is it a well-known myth, or did the person who told me just make this up?

Please forgive the extensive quote. I can’t find much worth removing from the story. From Dr. Henry writes about “Christina’s World”:

Wow, more info than I could have hoped for!

Thanks for the artist’s name and title, arara123.

Thank you for the link to the image, bibliophage. It’s been a while since I’d seen it and wasn’t certain if I had described it properly.

And thanks for the fascinating information behind the work, evilhanz. From the first time I’d seen that painting, I’ve always wondered what had inspired the artist.

SDMB rocks!

Why do I love this message board so much? Because of posts like that. One of my favorite paintings made even richer. You guys do nice work.

Looks just like your average not-so-blatant pornography to me.

Incidentally, she was the model and the muse for the painting, but she actually did not look like that at all. I don’t have the names at my fingertips, but there are several books about Wyeth that deal with Christina and show numerous photographs of her.
