BEATLES 20
Mariah Carey was the beneficiary of a change in how Billboard ranked its number ones back in the early 1990s. If you want to see how this change really affected things, take a look at the longest charting #1 hits. I’ll have to look it up when I get home, but IIRC all but one of the top 10 “longest time spent at #1” songs date from 1992.
Internet rumor has it that when she began challenging the Beatles, Billboard changed the rules again to prevent such a travesty from occurring, which drove her mad. You read it here first!
If your point is simply that you don’t like all the musical artists who are popular with others, I suspect that everyone on the board will agree with you. They just won’t agree about which artists to put on the  list. I, for instance, can’t abide Bryan Adams, who is one of your faves. And I’m very fond of Barbra Streisand, who’s on your hate list.
Also I think Mariah Carey and recent Madonna songs, for a while, had the “unfair” advantage of gaining points for singles sales as well as airplay, long after most artists stopped releasing singles. Although any artist had the option of releasing an actual single, only a few did it, and were pretty much guaranteed inflated chart positions as a result. Not sure if this has ever changed. I think this is also how Pearl Jam got a Top 5 hit out of “Last Kiss” (great cover of a great song, though).
I’ve always suspected that during the days of singles sales that although sales were a part of the equation, that picking a slot for a song was in some part made-up (sorta like book best-seller lists). I know that Casey Kasem used to say that rankings were based on a “combination of record sales and air play,” but it wouldn’t surprise me if some of it was just PFA (pulled from air).
WildfireMM**: Since you’re apparently from Central Europe, it’s not surprising that you’ve never heard of some of these acts. It may interest you to know that despite his stage name, Bobby Vinton is of Polish descent. His original name was Stanley Robert Vintula, Jr., and he sang in both English and Polish on his hit called My Melody of Love.
here is another interesting list…
