Years ago I read a short story about some ewok looking aliens that attempted to invade the Earth. Problem was, none of their technology other than the capability of FTL travel (which turned out to be exceedingly simple, and the only reason we didn’t come up with it is because someone dropped a decimal years back) had advanced beyond that of roughly the 16th Century on Earth. So, the aliens drop in on Earth in the late 20th Century and attempt to take over. Needless to say, it took us about 30 minutes to mop the floor with 'em. The story ended with two of the aliens looking at one another and thinking, “Oh shit! We just gave these guys the keys to the universe!” I don’t know if there was a sequel to the story written or not, but I’ve often thought about what would happen if we suddenly found ourselves in such a situation. I imagine that we’d start off with noble Star Trek-like intentions, which would get tossed out the window as soon as people started making lots and lots of money off technologically less advanced societies. Anybody else have any thoughts?
I think we’d start out benign enough, but eventually divvy up exploration of the galaxy among whatever bodies are in power.
I’m pretty sure that the title was “The Road Not Taken”, and that there was a sequel, though I can’t remember the name, or the author. The idea strikes me as kind of a wish fulfillment fantasy…all the barriers to getting out into space suddenly go poof, and we’re set loose on a galactic civilization with primitive technology. We’d have a grand old time…
Harry Turtledove.
See this link for info about the sequel.
As opposed to The High Crusade, where they dropped in with good tech, thought they could just scare medieval knights, who stormed the ship and took it over, and took swordplay to the stars. Anderson, IIRC.
