As Time Goes By (Not Casablanca related)

I’m lucky. On Saturday night our local PBS stations shows these programs:
Keeping Up Appearances
Are You Being Served
As Time Goes By
Waiting For God
The Red Green Show

The first two I can take or leave, but I’m always happy to see As Time Goes By or Waiting For God. Like a lot of people in this thread, I’ve seen most episodes two or three times, but they’re pleasant, comfortable, and funny. They’re also nice, decent people. There doesn’t seem to be much cruel humour in the show, if any. The way Jean is written annoys me every so often. In the earliest episodes, she’s shown as an intelligent, capable woman who set up her own successful business after being widowed, so why does she act like such a ditz at times? Judi and Sandy aren’t dummies, either, and who can forget the formidable Miss Ice Cubes? I’ll spoiler my comment for anyone who hasn’t seen that episode.

Jean should have been able to out do her when it came to competence, rather than being discombobulated by her.

I love Rocky and Madge and their attitude towards life and the episode where Jean and Lionel discover the local element is one of my favorites.

Rock on!

Oh, that one’s great! And Rocky and Madge are so very lovable.

Agreed, and the hubby and I could totally relate to it! We are not socializers, especially with irritating people that we don’t know very well, and Lionel and Jean’s discomfort with that whole community was spot-on.

Great show.

She’s an attractive woman but it did seem like the actress went through a rundown period late in the show. Hope nothing was wrong.

I’m glad they dropped the Judy going for Lionel and Alistair going for Jean part quickly.

I watched the first season many years ago and loved it…haven’t been able to follow the rest of it except occasionally. I’ve always felt sorry for poor Alistair…

How about Penny & Stephen. They may be a little over the top, but everybody knows people like that… Mrs. Bale just plain cracks me up. I think Lionel is my favorite though. I don’t know why I love his character so, but I do.

I’ve seen each episode enough times that if it’s a Penny episode, I’ll turn it off. I don’t find her the least bit amusing… only annoying.

ATGB is a sweet, comfy, cozy, funny, subtle, warm show.
