Er…you are aware that the consequences to taking diet pills to such extremes are a lot worse than lectures/classes? It just sounds like you view it as an inconvenience or as something that could hurt her as a Rangerette, not as something potentially life destroying or psychologically harmful.
Martini Enfield- I suppose that is true, but dance jobs are extremely difficult to get no matter the training. Rettes are just my experience with rules and requirements. I’d guess that serious dance programs also have strict requirements. Performance jobs are difficult to land and are often not very well paid.
Textual Intercourse- You caught us. We are secretly training to be assassins. Who would expect it? haha. It looks like they just included the girls middle names along with their first and last. Not a requirement. You are not assigned a middle name if you do not have one. It is common though in that region to be addressed by both first and middle names. I’m not sure why. And yes I have a middle name.
Freudian Slit- There are consequences for doing stupid things? Yeah, I’m very aware of the consequences of diet pills and crash diets. I was just trying to share what happened and how the directors tried to help girls that maybe were not aware. What do you want them to do? Search our rooms? Babysit 24/7? And maybe being lectured at is something that wouldn’t phase you at all. But being dressed down by two women I so greatly respect and admire would be a dynamic experience.
OK, I’ve watched some of the videos on Youtube. Wow.
What are the ingredients of a that seemingly effortless high kick? There’s got to be more to it that just flinging the leg up and hoping you make it (and don’t chip a tooth). What’s most important - flexibility, strength, control, or sheer anatomical good luck?
Well, it’s just that you make it sound like taking diet pills is some kind of youthful scrape that results in a lecture or something when I see it as a symptom of a really serious psychological problem that can potentially have life long results.
Um, not just anorexics-to-be take diet pills. You seem to be assuming it always will be serious. Plus, the way you phrased it came off as a bit insulting.
Kilgore! Another former alum here. From WAAAAY back. Rettes rule. Really classy team and THE BEST.
I found out they’re performing at the Cotton Bowl!
cwthree- Flexibility is important. But I think core strength is the most important. Core strength ensures that you can control that flexibility. The main goal is to kick to your nose, not shoulder, hit the top of the kick at the top of an even count and be down to “jump” on the odds. Lots of practice helps too.
And thanks BigT. Weight issues and dance are not mutually exclusive.
Eugene of Sandwich- Rack 'em Rangers! From way back? Mrs. Bolton Covin days? And have you been back through Kilgore at all? Its grown so much from when I was there.
Darth Sensitive-Rettes have performed at every Cotton Bowl since 1951 I believe. We usually go a few days before to practice with the bands, march in the parade and appear at some of the events organized for teams. Ms. Gussie Nell Davis is actually in the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. We actually receive a female version of the watches the players receive. I still wear mine.
And I love these guys!
Is there a list somewhere online of all the names of previous Rangerettes?
My father used to tell about his cousin having been “something”, and I thought it was a Rockette, but have since learned that’s wrong. Since the cousin was from W TX, I’m now more inclined to wonder if she weren’t a Rangerette.
Thanks!
I was in Kilgore earlier this month (on a business trip), and I went to the Rangerette Museum. Very informative and enjoyable.
Also ate at the Back Porch! My first time to have fried green beans with ranch dressing. Surprisingly tasty!
I grew up in Irving, TX and was familiar with the Rangerettes and Gussie Nell Davis. (never wanted to be a Rangerette)
WHere can I get myself a Kilgore rangerettes hat? I’ve always wanted one.
What do you have technique wise to tryout for the Rangerettes?
Hi Rachel L, welcome to the board.
With the vast library of conversations, you will often see interesting topics, like this one, were discussed a long time ago. In this case the thread started in December 2009 and the op ceased visiting the board about a year later. Therefore I would not expect an answer.
Good luck in your search.
Mannnny years ago when I was a high school kid and a member of the McDonald’s All-American High School Marching Band, we stayed in the same New York hotel as the Rangerettes during our appearance in the Macy’s Tgiving day parade. We all marveled at how put together your girls were at any hour. The parade itself is such an enormous mass of equipment and humanity that we didn’t see them perform and we didn’t know until later what group the girls we saw were affiliated with. We thought they were pageant girls because of the camera-ready appearance.
Since Kilgore is a junior college, is there an agreement in place with a four-year school that participants can transfer to if they wish to keep doing the precision dancing and drilling?
Do you get a full scholarship for this?
When you graduate and go looking for a job, do you plan to put it on your resume?
Is there an alumni network you could use to tap into for possible employment?
Once you make the team is that it? Can you be kicked off? Do you have to retry-out every year?
Has any Rangerette ever gone into a professional dancing job?
Has any Rangerette ever gone onto becoming a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader?
Drill team zombies stop attending their junior college classes.
Do the boys at the school need to have the drool periodically wiped off their faces?
While they are technically a dance team, I can’t help but associate them with drum and bugle corps.
Do they often perform with such a group?
I can’t stand to be within blocks of a drum and bugle corp playing. The noise level is astonishing. (Which seems to be the intended goal.) I’d be really worried about my hearing (and sanity) if I had to perform around such outfits regularly.
Madison used to be the host of a national championship contest of drum and bugle corps. I don’t know how many came and they were scattered at parks all around the city for their practices. It was horrible, but now they go somewhere else, so peace has returned to the valley.
