Short story where in the future polynesians(?) alone can operate space ships with solar sails. Main character is a Polynesian crewman who had to be set adrift on a small craft because he had killed a villainous passenger. A young girl who has a crush on him sneak on board. Somewhat open ending.
Poul Anderson has a series of stories about future Polynesians. Bet it’s one of them
The Maurai series
I don’t think that’s it, I remember reading a story like the one Chelonaut mentions and the Polynesians were the only ones who could operate ship because the melanin in their skins protected them from radiation. There was no mention of a Maurai nation dominating parts of Earth, in fact IIRC everybody had mostly departed Earth except for Muslims and Jews who continued fighting over it or something like that.
I have a sci fi magazine somewhere around with that short story (in Spanish) I’ll try to find it.

I can’t find it, I think I put it in a box with a lot of other books I had no place for and it’s now in the attic.
Google is not helping either.
Also the wikipedia article on the Maurai series says that they’re only just starting to maybe develop space travel in the concluding book, so I don’t see how the story I described could belong there.
Thanks for looking up your magazine collection. I think I read the story in an anthology, could be one I actually own, if only my book collection wasn’t such an unordered mess I might actually find it.
