thought I should make some comments.
Im Norwegian and have been to the faroes several times now. Its a lovely place, with lovely people. When people describe local politics to me, I can see they`re of Norwegian ancestry. The way they pick on each others, the weird rude/polite manner of their religious wackos and other smal traits remind me so much more of Norwegians than danes.
On one of my trips to the faroes, I participated in the whalehunt (Grindadràp) my family was driving away from a town we had visited and saw the boats and the whales aproaching shore. we took some pictures and turned around. I was one of many dragging the whales up the beach. It is one of my most powerfull memories from the faroes. People were smiling and giving orders and observing and helping. to participate in something like that is very emotionally sigificant. I guess I felt more like a part of the community.
the actual killing of the whales went very fast and those who did the killing were obviously making sure the whales suffered as little as possible.
I think the faroese whalehunting is a very important part of faroese culture and traditions. It is a bonding experience between generations and communities, and imprtant to remaining reasonably self-sufficient.
Concerning other things. the capital Tòrshavn is a very nice and diverse town. There are old houses and new houses both mixed and clustered together. They have a very living, vibrant clothing tradition mixing new and old styles very successfully. they have also kept their food traditions, their cuisine, very much alive and mixed it with modern, imported foods better and to a greater degree than Norway. They sell small dishes based on traditional food at sporting events, festivals etc.
The Parks, or as I like to call them “small forests” in Tòrshavn are very well designed. Walking in them feels very much like walking in an actuall forest.
They also have lots of artists, painters and so on.
I really love the place and … I guess Im having trouble expressing myself. Il stop writing before I muck it all up.
