Ask the Planned Parenthood Nurse

Yeah, my PP (SoCal) didn’t perform abortions. If that was your decision, they would refer you to another clinic.

But as far as most protesters are concerned, there is no reason to let facts get in the way of some righteous outrage…

I once ran a friend through a very vocal gauntlet of anti-abortion protesters- it was pretty ugly. Those gals could really get to people- one caught a glimpse of my friend’s photo keychain and immediately yelled “Is that your boyfriend? You two would have such a beautiful baby!”

Ok, that is just hilarious. A little bigger bomb and they could have burned books and abortion clinics.

Count me in the number of people who regularly used PP in my 20’s as pretty much the ONLY place I could afford to go for healthcare. I also got grocery bags full of condoms for all my roommates pretty regularly. (So I know at least 5 guys that benefitted from their services).

I just checked, the only PP near me now is across town near the university. How on earth do girls get from age 15-30 without PP?

I knew a clinic escort once. That must have been a hell of a job.

Have you considered printing out this thread and taking it to work with you? I think it would be pretty neat to see the variety of locations and experiences we have had with PP over the years and for them to understand what warm fuzzy feelings most of us have because of the care we received.

Be well, be safe, and keep it up. We need you.

Here’s a really good article written by a med student who did a rotation at Planned Parenthood and found out it was completely different from what he expected. He had never given any thought before to what women do obtain contraception.

Thank you, Maureen, for all you do. I have two or three friends who volunteered escorting patients to and from their cars for PP back in the 90s, and I would’ve joined them if I wasn’t so scared of the pro-life protesters.

I have a question: you and some of the other posters have mentioned PP doctors and other volunteers going to speak at schools. Is it possible to take an individual minor to PP for information? Based on some of the stories I’ve read on this thread, it seems the educational services PP provides are sorely needed. :frowning:

You guys are freaking me out with all this IUD talk. I’m getting one in 2 weeks, never had kids, and definitely not getting any sort of anesthetic–I’ve been told to take 800 milligrams of Ibuprofin and I’ll be fine. Now I’m all scared shitless about the pain!

To the OP, you are a beautiful and blessed person and I honor your organization, I donate to PP every time I go in for their services, and have been with them ever since I was 17 and on my own. Even though I was using the Pill for non-BC purposes, I had to get that yearly exam, and they always made it somewhat bearable. I hope to volunteer there at some point doing some interpreting or something.

I want to say “thank you”. When I was joining Peace Corps, I had to do a very extremely complete medical examination- something that took several days and involved a huge number of tests (I think there were like five different blood tests alone.). At the time I was uninsured. But Planned Parenthood helped me, and I ended up paying next to nothing. Every other doctor or organization I called slammed the phone on me. It’s thanks to Planned Parenthood that I am here living out my dreams.

A funny story…on my last day of testing, my good gay friend took me to the clinic. We waited and I finally got the last piece of paperwork I needed- getting it had been a process that took months. As we walked out of the clinic, I gave him a high five and rejoiced “it’s over! Thank god! I’m sooooo happy. Best day ever!” Just then a woman walked over with a horrified look on her face and shoved a pamphlet in my hand. It was for a pro-life “post abortion counciling.” It didn’t dawn on me until I was on the way home. I started laughing my ass off. She must have been shocked that I was actually celebratory…
