Ask the Satanist

Why not? Unlike your “bibliophile” example, doesn’t the word “Satanist” have pretty clear implications? To take your other example again, isn’t sort of like saying loudly that you’re a “bibliosexual,” then making fun of people for being ignorant when they think you’re saying you have sex with books?

<sigh> I used the -phile because it was mentioned as an example up-thread as a term with an absolute connotation, as in pedophile. I was showing that it can have a different, non-sexual context. Also, the biblio to Bible is a reasonable jump if you don’t understand the origins of either word. Just like Satan and ist.

As I explained earlier, the suffix “-ist” does not denote worship. Cyclist do not worship bikes, machinist do not worship machines, etc. etc. etc.

Also, from the etymology “satan” denoted an adversial role, before Christianity assigned it as the name of demon.

It requires a double mistake/assumption to misunderstand the term Satanist, and I’ve also conceded that I was guilty of it myself. I was showing it also required two similar leaps of ignorance, although understandable, to think a book-lover was getting to know his KJV in a err, biblical sense.

Your example above doesn’t really seem to follow suit in the context of this discussion.

Again I think Pantheon is doing a fine job of answering questions in my absence. One thing I’d add to his comment above - people are under the mistaken impression that Satanists care that others have misconceptions about them. Satanism doesn’t proselytise (quite the opposite) and if someone is unwilling or unable to research the subject and properly understand it that’s their problem. Whilst the COS has media representation and agents who work to make sure it is presented correctly that doesn’t mean they try and package it to appeal to people.

If someone doesn’t like the symbolism or connotations of Satanism, that is again their problem.

I’m in the process of reviving a religion that worships a powerful entity who rebelled against god and who in return for acts of unspeakable evil including human sacrifice will grant you wealth and power during your lifetime.

There will be much feasting, orgies, drugs, booze and lazing around though it will be a given that you must lie, cheat and steal in everyday life, must make ordinary people miserable and never feel guilty about anything.

If we make it into a game it could be fun!

The downside is that when you die you spend eternity in the torments of hell.

Unfortunately the name that we were going to choose has already been copyrighted so if interested in joining could you apply to the Young Conservatives Association somewhere in London…I dont know it doesn’t seem to have the right vibe about it .

Bloody name stealing Satanists.

Thanks Lust4life, that really something added to the thread.

How is Lust4Life responsible to you or the well being of the thread? It certainly broke no law to post that. The mods are unlikely to take action because of it. L4L felt the desire to make that post, and had the power to do so.

To me, making that post seems like a very Satanic thing to do.

Lust4Life, there are people who call themselves theistic or spiritual Satanists, as well as devil worship and demonolatry. Or perhaps you could call your group “My Stubborn Misconceptions of Satanists”?

Illuminati has opened him/herself up here in an attempt to cure ignorance or allow people to satisfy their curiousity. Some of you had misconceptions and feel the need to defend them by blaming a religious group for having a name which confused you. You seem further upset that the group doesn’t care about your confusion, and won’t change its name for you.

Put on your big boy pants and deal with it. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not people expecting to provide an alibi for Big J, Judaism is not the worship of Judah, Lutherans don’t worship Luther, The Church of Latter Day Saints is not actually a physical building made by stacking saints, and the YMCA has members which are not young, male, or Christian.

Choosing to be willfully ignorant in the face of contrary evidence is not nearly as clever or entertaining as you think it is. Why not leave the thread to people actually asking questions and people answering them?

Episcopalians worship Joe Piscopo (though they’re not certain he’s the son of God).

Maybe I’m wrong here, but I think it’s your sense of humor that needs fine-tuning, not Lust4Life’s alleged preconceived notions.

Ok, I just found some of the satanic bible.

If satan in satanism just means someone in an adverserial role, why does it say this:
“In the name of Satan, the Ruler of the earth, the King of
the world, I command the forces of Darkness to bestow their
Infernal power upon me!”

What do you think of Zeena LaVey and her hubby Nikolas Schreck?

It felt like thread shitting to me, hence my comment. Did you see a hissy fit or any call for him to delete his comment? No? Then what’s your point?

mr. jp, that potion of TSB is partly intended for constructing rituals and invocations. Satanic rituals often contain all the kinds of stereotypical imagery you’d imagine as well as the kinds of rites and language (minus the sacrificing of animals, babies, humans and so forth). These rituals are conducted as psychodrama and knowingly so, no-one involved is actually calling out to an external being. Again, Satan is an image, not a person. It’s the same when Satanists say to each other (or write) ‘Hail Satan!’ We’re not actually hailing the the lord of hell, we’re affirming our belief in Satanism and using the image to remind ourselves of what it represents. Thanks for the link though, I can inform the COS that the website is breaking copyright law and let them take the necessary action.

FriarTed, I don’t really have much of an opinion of them, having never met them or read any of their works. I’ve seen quite a few questions on the Satanic forum I visit which asks lots of questions about LeVay’s family in a way that suggests its a personality cult and that they must have some special claim to it, but it’s not the case (the same applies for his daughter Karla and grandson Stanton). As far as I know the two of them are pretty dormant, operating only a mail service to people interested in their own ideology (which I don’t know much about). From what I’ve read about Zeena in her wiki entry and the book I Lucifer she seems a bit of a belief-system jumper.

No I’m sorry me old mucker but I’m not going to let you get away with that.

If someone describes themselves as a Maoist I dont expect them to profess Fascist beliefs.

Satan is a known mythological character with a known history and known characteristics.

SATAN gods adversary…ISt follower of Satan and his Credo,NOT rather unadventurous Liberal Humanists trying to pretend that they aren’t really boring and trying to shock people.

His persona was widely known centuries before you people hijacked his name so you cant pretend not to know the connotations of the title that you have adopted for yourselves.
It looks very much like that you have deliberately chosen a Bad Ass name for yourselves probably to impress people with how wild, rebellious and hedonistic you all are without actually having the moral courage to live that life style.

I’m an old bastard and was brought up in an age when sexual liberation was’nt the norm but being a teenager I wanted some so I religiously studied Wicca and other alternative religions because I’d heard about the orgies etc. so I do actually know something about this subject and who knows ?maybe even a little more then you do.

As to my hurting Illuminatis feelings !!! I hurt a Satanists feelings by doing a gentle piss take?.I’ve heard it all now!

I’m sorry shipmates but whether you realise it or not you’re phoneys,go with what you know and stop trying to pretend to be what you so obviously are not.

Thirty seconds after you’ve told your admiring audience that you are Satanists they will realise that you’re not and never could be in a million years Satanists, milk monitors maybe but definitely not Satanists.

Your title COULD be construed as deliberate misrepresentation, which is great for the followers of evil, but not so good for a society that is not a million miles away from …insert name here .Western Liberals.
I’ll just make my declaration now ,I may be an evil bastard according to some people ,Hello Karen!,but I have never actually been a Satanic supporter.

Well whatever you think, personally I don’t agree. My feelings weren’t hurt, I was just hoping the thread would stay clean. I actually quite liked your (rather accurate) description of the Young Conservatives Association.

My point is isn’t threadshtting a very Satanic thing to do? If you feel like doing it, and there are no consequences, doesn’t Satanism demand you threadsht?

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly Satanic or un-Satanic; I don’t feel the need to do it myself but again it’s what works for other people. I just wanted my thread to stay clean. I suspect I’m probably being teased here but what the hell, I opened myself up to that by starting this thread.

I’m not teasing. From reading this thread I got the following ‘Do what you wilt if you won’t get punished.’

Isn’t that accurate? If it is accurate, why should people respect your wish for your thread to stay clean?

Not quite - again you’ve tossed out the whole responsibility bit, although that’s not to say that all Satanists go around being paragons of virtue. There’s plenty of vociferous argument and occasional threadshitting going at the Satanic forum I belong to (which, I keep meaning to tell people, is Letters to the Devil , in case anyone wants to check it out - you can’t see very much without registering with it though).

Besides, this is less about whether such behaviour is Satanic or not and more about whether it’s helping to fight ignorance (which is what this board, and this thread, are about).

On an additional note one of the Satanic rules of the earth is that if you enter the lair of another to show them respect or else not go there - crashing into someone’s realm, shitting on the carpet and throwing yourself out the window isn’t looked on very favourably. I wouldn’t say this applies to this thread though, in case you think I am - it hardly constitutes my property.

Ok, I’m on page 3, but I’m also on cold meds, so I’m a bit fuzzy.

How is this different from a kind of cynical narcissism? (not the pathological kind of narcissism). Hell, we all worship ourselves at some level–and god (og?) knows we worship our lifestyles…

Truly not being snarky, but I just don’t see a religion per se, here. I see the set of beliefs(a doctrine?), but usually a religion involves some sort of discipline (unless it means that if you saw a small child drowning, you couldn’t help? No compunction to aid the weak etc?), some sort of sacrifice on the part of believers (or at least a recognition of the believers inability to live up to the standards set by the faith construct), and a coherence of belief across at least some geography–gah, I’m getting all hung up on how to describe/define a religion!

I am putting this badly–I don’t mean to sound critical. I am truly  . I consider myself quasi-religious (spiritual might be the better word), but don’t attend any ceremonies or services at present. I am also self-centered and essentially out for me–am I a Satanist?

Why Not: You are absolutely right. I was wrong. Verse 40.

Well, that explains that!
