Drugs (including a few drugs designed from scratch) are fairly widely used recreationally and they aren’t generally a problem - the ones you have today that are both highly addictive and highly destructive simply aren’t available; alcohol is also widely enjoyed and this has caused a problem or two, but since overuse of it tends to render people unfit for work (and that is a bad thing for the whole community), it doesn’t often spiral out of control.
It isn’t really possible to get a broad picture of the justice system, but there have been instances where a series of crimes had been committed, terminating in the sudden disappearance of a person - it is impossible to find out what happens to them, but it is speculated that they are conscripted to work on board cargo vessels or in mining operations, where the regime is (supposedly) very strict.
it is quite hard to properly describe the ethic of interdependence in the community; many petty crimes simply don’t happen because it affects everybody, many more simply don’t happen because of lack of opportunity.
From your name I have noticed you too have a food plant based name, does this mark a trend set to increase? Is it because of people like me and The Pyscho Melon(long story, he used a different forum) that this trend has arisen? If not then who do i have to kill to ensure that it is?
Oh and has anyone worked out the purpose of no alcohol beer?
The history of modern civilization is largely a history of expanding access to information resulting in increased personal freedom. From the printing press to telegraph to radio/TV to the internet, information and education have resulted, directly or indirectly, in the collapse of monarchies, the fall of the Soviet empire, the transformation of China from Maoism to a largely market-based economy (not free, but heading that way). What possible catastrophe could have returned society to totalitarianism? And how can information be freely available if communication is difficult?
Normally, when we look back at our ancestors, we get a “How could they be so STUPID” feeling for some of their actions. For example, the high use of mercury in gold mining causing widespread chaos, or the rampant paranoia against Communists in the 50’s, with no real proof.
What sort of things make you look at us, and just want to slap us upside our heads, so that we see the mistakes we are making?
the computers provide access to information, but the system (called ISAN) is formly in control - the quasi-intelligent interface is always poilte and gives the impression of compliance, but as I said earlier, I get the impression that the content is being filtered or possibly altered. Control of information was part of the process of change; the telecommunications giants were incorporated by the government; there was no flow of data except through government-controlled agencies (which makes organising any kind of resistance much more difficult).
Well, I’d probably say something about the conditions that led up to the conflict and ultimately the siezure of power by the government of the European nation, but there isn’t any distinct cause I can put my finger on and also, I’m not sure if the alternative would be worse.
Most people in 2068 consider the proliferation of personal transport (and indeed the concept of personal mobility, regardless of mode) that you have today to be highly frivolous, but part of the reason they think that is social conditioning.
Not to the best of my knowledge; it seems to have fizzled out (although orbital devices for communications and other purposes are still being launched) Perhaps the USA still has a manned space programme - it wasn’t something I was able to find out about.
Not as far as I know.
About 60% of the population is naturally immune to AIDS; many forms of cancer are easily treatable by localised non-intrusive methods, a number of new drug treatments have been found effective, but there are still some forms of cancer that remain very hard to treat. The common cold (or rather, its descendents) is still around, but due to the relatively closed nature of the communities and the size of the populations therein, it is less frequent.
Crime isn’t all that common and I haven’t the slightest idea what methods the authorities use in detecting them - the punishment would appear to be quite severe though - people simply disappear in the night.
Do they make you go out into an abandoned city that’s locked in a constant snowstorm to collect samples so they can find out what the Army of the Twelve Monkeys really did?
You obviously speak English. Is this the language of all Europe, or do German, French, etc., still exist? What are some words that were coined between 2003 and 2068?
