That’s right folks, in the tradition of Ask the Closeted Bisexual Guy and Ask the Gay Guy . Here’s another place to ask those questions you may be to embarrassed to ask in person, namely,“What’s it like to live in Wisconsin”. Also share your stereotypes, if you have any. Do we always eat cheese? Is it true our babies are nursed on beer? Let me have it, disparaging remarks and flames welcomed.
(BTW, this is NOT a slam on the mentioned columns, I enjoyed them very much.)
Do you listen to the public radio show, Whad’ya Know? with Michael Feldman and if so, do you live close enough to see it in person (it airs from Madison) and if so, do you make an effort to see it every single week they broadcast from home?
(I really love that show and would probably make an effort to see it in person as often as possible if I lived close enough)
Do you electric power there yet? How about cable TV?
Sorry, strike that; I hear WI is very beautiful. True?
Hey, ChiefWahoo…I live in WI, too. I live in Eau Claire. Where do you live?
My parents live in Eau Claire, actually I grew up in the area. What a coincidence. I used to live on Water street, way back when.
I’m picking my braincells on this one…where was it…anyway…In a little town near Madison was one of the last shops that offered sales/service and PRODUCT for Edison Amberol cylinder phonographs. The owner responded personally in longhand with advice and upkeep points.
Do you find yourself bored often?
What do you do for fun?
Well Chief, I’m from Wisconsin, too. And my question to you is: how, oh enlightened one, do we explain sheepshead, my passion, to non-cheeseheads?
I’ve tried, Lord knows. I explain about the 32 card deck, the 14 trump, the blitzes, the cracks, the 3-handed, 4-handed, 5-handed versions, and their eyes glaze over. I invite them to Yahoo Sheepshead, I make analogies to euchre. I listen patiently to the lurid sheep sex comments, even contributing a joke or two, hoping for converts.
I describe clearly and precisely the rapidly shifting partnerships and alternative methods of choosing partners–but do they appreciate the diversity? NO! They claim it’s too confusing. Advise me, oh WI GUY, for indeed, U Rock–no wait that’s in Illinois.
Got a deck of cards? Call ace or jack of diamonds partner? Doublers, leasters? Nickel a point, double on the bump? Dealer sits out and 69 score buys beer?
What did you do before the Green Bay Packers formed, and permeated every aspect of life in Wisconsin?
Just wander aimlessly, like the Lost Tribes of Israel?
Why doesn’t the AWA get its due when they discuss pro-wrestling? I mean it basically stocked the WWF when they started?
And does your name harken back to the AWA?
This coming from the Stevens Point contingent.
Oh, and Milrossian.
There was a time before the Green Bay Packers?
I am also from Wisconsin. Ugh, did I hate it - I wouldn’t live there again if you gave me a million dollars.
I grew up in Milwaukee where the only cool things were Earwaves Record Store, Brady Street and the Oriental Pharmacy.
Earwaves is gone, Oriental Pharmacy was remodeled into crap and Brady Street has gone strip mall.
I went to college for two years in Madison. The only clubs that had good live music were Club de Wash, The Chamber and O’Cayz Corral. Club de Wash burned down, The Chamber closed and O’Cayz Corral is only open on weekends now.
My questions: Is Wisconsin still full of jocks and hicks and conservative assholes who hassle people who don’t think like them? Is Milwaukee’s Best really the best?
Wow, SaxFace. A little bitter?
Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy Wisconsin. I personally can think of few other places I would live.
Problem with Conservatives in Milwaukee and Madison? Those are the more liberal areas of the state.
However I can see why you might hate Wisconsin if your only experiences that stand out are Madison and Milwaukee. The state has a lot more to offer.
I’m hoping some of what you say is tongue in cheek. Jocks, hicks and conservative assholes… that’s a little harsh.
We drink a lot. And eat pickled things out of jars.
Your pickled brain-in-a-jar,
Myron
Imbibo, ergo sum.
Well, hey, it’s better than Michigan.
Let me also invite you to the Midwest DopeFest, being held in Columbus, Ohio on the first weekend of August (4-6). It’ll be a blast!
Sleddie, I lived in Wisconsin for 20 years. My grandparents had a farm near Sheboygan, my best friend lived in Appleton, we used to go dancing in Green Bay, I spent summers up north by Eagle River and Gleason, I went “skiing” at Devil’s Head and Powderhorn in the winter, I drove to Minneapolis pretty frequently, my best friend went to college in LaCrosse.
I will not hesitate to state that Wisconsin is full of ignorant, totally intolerable people. I’m sure you’re not one of them, but I have no respect for the state as a whole. And while I lived there I could only write so many editorials.
Milwaukee and Madison liberal? snort - hilarious. I’m not the only one who thinks like this: my boss left (she grew up in Green Bay and went to school in Madison), my sister left (age 18), my brother left (age 18), my father just moved to Europe and my mother will be moving to the East Coast when she retires (she works for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel).
I think either you love Wisconsin or you hate it - my family and friends and I enjoy trashing it. Yeah, I’m bitter – if I would’ve grown up in a better place, I’d probably be a better person.
See now I’m curious, a little defensive, but mostly curious.
What is it that makes you hate our state so?
Ignorant people? They aren’t unique to Wisconsin.
There is some part of this equation that is missing.
Madison is indeed the most liberal parts of this state and at one time was one of the more liberal cities in the country.
What am I missing? I beseech you in hopes that I can learn a second new thing today.(The whole AC Green being a virgin and wearing a green bear on his head on the bench thing got me already)
Back to the OP: Do you really believe that Door County is “World Famous”?
IMHO, Best thing about Wisconsin: Noah’s Ark
My only experience with Wisconsin is driving through it on the way to Chicago one time. I arrived in Chicago about 7 a.m. so you can guess what I saw of the state.
But what I can tell you is this: Wisconsin has some of the nicest rest stops in the country (at least in the 25 states or so where I have used a rest stop).
Bright Orange cheese.
I really enjoyed the little bit of WI that I’ve seen, the Lake Geneva area is gorgeous… does it really freeze in winter? (Not being from a continental climate this is still something I have a real problem visualizing).
The WI people I met were pleasant and friendly, and some in Milwaukee were nice enough to tell this ignorant tourist that walking any more blocks in the direction I was going might not have been the best thing for my health.
PS: “Old World Wisconsin” was fun.
I used to live in Pewaukee, & went to school in Waukesha.
How’s the job market up there? What are rents on efficiency apartments like?
I used to love the church Fall Festivals. And the Waukesha County Fair.
