I’m considering applying for a new job, but the ad for the job says to send my salary requirements along with my resume and cover letter. How do I know what range is reasonable? Obviously, one of the reasons for considering a new job is to make more than what I’m making now. But I don’t want to give a range that’s too high, and end up pricing myself out of the running. However, I also don’t want to give a number that’s too low and earn less than I could. I looked at the salary calculator on monster.com, but there’s nothing there that’s comparable to the job I’m considering. I’m going to be talking to the outgoing employee (the one whose job I’m applying for); is it ok to ask her for a rough estimate of the salary that would be reasonable? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
