Dogs and cats sleep with their eyes open. Why don’t humans?
I’ve seen my brother do it many times, although his eyes are really only 3/4 open when it happens.
He’s also chronically sleep deprived, if that explains it.
My wife does it, so much that she has prescription eye drops because of chronic dry eye.
I do it too.
I sometimes sleep with my eyes open. It really bugs people when the see me sleeping that way.
One time when I was a Midshipman one of my classmates woke me to ask me if I was OK because I was asleep with my eyes open.
Apparently my wife does it at work meetings, people ask her if she has silent seizures. She just zones out and stares into space and has no idea what is going on.
Wow. A weird thing I don’t do. At least I don’t think I do. Now I’m gonna have to film myself asleep to find out.
My sister at least used to do this. She would talk to my mom while doing it too. She was totally unconscious, and would not remember any of it. Infuriated my mom to no end.
Heck, now that I think about it, me being asleep with my eyes open wouldn’t even really be an accomplishment. I’ll get up, walk around, talk, have sex (fortunately as far as I know only with my girlfriend or wife - my subconscious is reportedly pretty romantic, if oddly detached), do all sorts of stuff. I’ve only gone outside once or twice, though. Eyes open? I’m worried about grabbing the car keys. Fortunately, the last time I went outside, I didn’t even grab the house keys (I don’t remember if I put on pants), locked myself out, and didn’t venture far. My wife found me because I was mindlessly squeaking the storm door open and closed. Apparently planning isn’t my subconscious’ strong suit. It’s not conscious me’s strong suit, so I shouldn’t be surprised.
So, eyes open while sleeping? That’s how half of this nonsense apparently starts. I would be very surprised that I’m doing a lot of this stuff with my eyes closed.
Yes, I’ve also been very surprised that I said something out loud. Sometimes, I’m not really sure who’s driving this station wagon that’s hauling around my brain.
My son used to do this, back in the day, up till when he was about one. It was awful. Because you know, normally when you’re getting a little baby to sleep you do whatever it is you do, they go to sleep, then you sneak out. But I couldn’t sneak out - he’d SEE me!
These days naturally he’ll sleep through an earthquake. Especially if it’s a school day…
I’ve been known to sleep, eyes open, sitting up, when exhausted.
I feel you, dude, I feel you. I didn’t know sleeping with your eyes open was akin to sleepwalking and talking.
Well, I didn’t realize that it was likely true until I was writing about my mom complaining about my sister sleeping with her eyes open and talking to her. I then realized that when I was about 8 years old, I walked into my mom’s bedroom, woke her up and said “Watch this!”. She then followed me back to my bedroom where I climbed back in bed and fell asleep.
I then realized that no-one that had observed me in this state mentioned my eyes were closed. If they mentioned anything, it was that I didn’t really look at them, but that I looked through them.*
So, maybe not everyone has their eyes open if they do other nonsense while sleeping, but I’m pretty sure I do.
*I have an eye that goes lazy at some angles, and is worse when I’m tired. It’s sometimes difficult to see where I’m looking.
Holy moly. I have an eye that goes lazy too. Maybe were related.
Oh, I’m almost sure we are. It’s just a question of how close. Let’s agree to not consciously have children.
ETA:As in, I’m sure we’re both descended from fish.
Well, obviously you can’t sleepwalk with your eyes closed.
I come from a family of sleepwalkers, and usually it’s not obvious at first that the person is doing it.
I totally agree. BTW, how long is your second toe?
I’ve got Morton’s toe. Yourself?
I like to say I have the ‘royal toe’.
I have heard stories about people that do this, but I have never seen a dog or cat sleep with its eyes open.
My dog Kona does it all the time. I was forbidden from observing that he must be a wizard.
