Ass-Hatted Republicans want to make Patriot Act permanent.

Aye…

I offer you…my sig:

Well, at the next meeting of us Godless Commie Pinko Lefties, I’ll be sure and bring it up and we’ll do what we can to fix that.

'kay?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Can’t make the next meeting, Guinn, and its my turn on refreshments. Can you pick up a couple gallons of dago red and some ethanol? Get you next time, ok?

And for the legal experts out there: GeeDubya can’t be declared President for Life without a constitutional amendment, right? No matter what the Supine Court says?

(Sometimes I take considerable comfort in living three hours from Canada…)

How do these Republicans sleep at night?

Blalron: I imagine they close their eyes and count sheep.

(sorry, I felt like I had to attempt my own one liner)

To be serious, though, I find this absolutely ridiculous, and hope that this doesn’t fly.

Reminds me of HUAC.

:frowning:

Anyone wanna join me in emigrating to Canada? Last I checked, Citizenship and Immigration Canada says paralegals are a shortage profession in that neck of the woods, which I believe gets me extra points on the immigration scorecard. Besides, it snowed here on Monday, so how much worse could the weather possibly be?

I’m sensing an impending decrease in the need for my services in assisting people in immigrating to the U.S…can’t imagine where such an idea might have originated…

Eva Luna, you have to keep in mind that snow and bad weather don’t necessarily go together in the Canadian mind. I spent a couple hours today on the deck, no shirt, no shoes, beer in hand, enjoying the sun. Four feet away from me was a back yard covered in six inches of snow.

It’s that kind of mental adjustment that can cause problems for immigrants.

Good luck with that whole fighting the surrender of all individual rights to the whims of the executive branch thing, though. We’re all pulling for you. Really. There are a lot of you and you’re right next door and heavily armed and I know I prefer it when you can keep yourselves busy with internal controversies rather than looking around and wondering what to do next.

Not unlike democrats proposing “temporary tax increases”. Pipe dreams. No difference.

Well, you know what they say: “As goes Ohio, so goes Eastern Indiana.”

Yo.

I’ve had this longstanding thing for Victoria B.C anyway. The pure loopy stupidity that keeps going on here at home is wearing me down. Hype and ballyhoo have drowned out anything remotely resembling sense. And I’m about as center-of-the-road as you can get.

Holy Orwell, Batman.

[sub]Can someone born in Ohio have a Canadian soul?[/sub]

You’re worn down by political stupidity, so you want to move to B.C.?

That’s like being sick and tired of guns and moving to Texas.

Well, if you insist on taking an anal, real-world view of things…

Sigh. Okay. Screw that escape fantasy. Not that I’m bitter.

Killjoy.

Veb

Come to Saskatchewan, Veb. We can find a place for you here.

My people are generally bitter, cynical, and unwilling to move much more than an inch either way. It keeps the political stupidity to a background level.

We’ll airdrop some lawyers right away…

I think I’ll move to Alberta. Maybe Zap Rowsdower will give me a job working on his truck.

Actually there is quite a difference, in fact a great number of differences, chief among them being, that a tax increase has no bearing whatsoever on the rights guaranteed you by the Constitution, while the Patriot Act seeks to take those rights away from you.

This is a thread in Great Debates about this. Someone posed the question “What specific provisions of the Act do you find objectionable?” to which only one person attempted to answer and after being rebutted said himself said “But I am unqualified to presently effectively advocate against permanent PA in this thread.”

Please visit the thread and answer the question as I’m curious if people are complaining about something specific or complaining because they are so partisan that the PA must be bad because of it’s source.

Republicans are pursuing at least three parallel tracks to make sure something gets passed. Hatch has his bullshit to make PATRIOT permanent, the White House is drafting an expanded PATRIOT II, and Senators Schumer and Kyl have introduced a less well known third bill which could easily be amended to accept the provisions of the other two.

This McCarthy Moment has been brought to you by Clio-B-Gone, condemning humans to repeating the past since Genesis 2:4.

Ooh, ooh, can I join the exodus as well? DanielWithrow and I have a friend in Edmonton, and we’re trying to become au pairs for her baby. Y’know, teach the wee Canadian crumbsnatcher all about a different culture, feed her moonpies, and croon Elvis to her. Very enriching.
