It’s too late - someone’s already assassinated Garfield.
But (barring a total breakdown in the democratic system and the rise of a dictator) it seems to me that all assassinating a president you don’t like would achieve is to make him a martyr and to give his supporters impetus to drive forward even further with the sorts of policies and practices that pissed you off in the first place. Entirely counterproductive.
Under certain circumstances I might be on board with pantsing a President, though.
Funny you should mention that particular play. I recall, not all that long ago, Trump supporters getting all worked up about a production of Julius Caesar that portrayed Caesar as a Trump-like figure, and claiming that liberals would never have let a production go forward with Obama as Caesar…until it was pointed out that five years earlier such a production had gone forward and no one had given a shit about it.
So I’m gonna say that, until such time as there is more evidence than mere gut feelings that this sort of thread would not have been allowed under Obama, such an assertion is without merit.
As long as the thread avoided actual attacks (or encouraging assassinations) of specific persons, there is no reason to believe that such a thread would have been shut down during Obama’s term in office.
Haven been given the go-ahead to start this thread here, I’d like to start a frank and (mostly) open discussion.
Seriously, go back and read that thread, Bone’s statements in particular. We’ll wait. When is assassinating the president the just and moral choice?

It should never be just or moral.
However, these are exceptional times and the US is a failing state that is descending into fascism. Broadly speaking their citizens are uneducated, without access to universal healthcare and obsessed with guns, religion and subsidising the rich. An uneducated and angry populace has elected a nutter who reflects their moral values and collective intellect. As such the world is on the brink of nuclear war.
Killing Donald Trump is what an American patriot would do. Sadly, they no longer exist in the Putin White House. It takes a nation of idiots to elect a Donald Trump (irrespective of Putin). Unless the US starts educating their citizens, killing Trump will only delay the inevitable. It is likely too late.
Y’know, one of the nice things about living in a democracy is that you know that there’s going to be a change in who holds power in a few years (or a few more, if the reelection campaign is successful, but even then not that long), and nobody is going to throw a fucking war over it. This didn’t happen in feudal times. When a king passed, there were very regular bloody wars over who got to be next in line to the throne. I think declaring it okay to assassinate the president is a good step towards ensuring bloody wars of succession.
Seriously, I can imagine scenarios where it would be reasonable to assassinate the president. He’s lost his mind and is currently trying to nuke moscow, and there’s no other way to stop him, for example. But all of these scenarios involve a significant loss of life and serious criminal activity that needs to be stopped ASAP and can’t just wait for congress to intervene. Everything else can, in theory, be solved at the ballot box. It might take time, it might cost lives, but a dirty little secret in politics is that everything costs lives. Not all policy is equal, but almost nothing is really black and white, either. Even in cases where there’s a clear correct policy and the president isn’t doing it (like Reagan’s response to the AIDS crisis, or the South African government’s response to the AIDS crisis), you have to seriously weigh the cost/benefit of waiting 4-8 years and ousting them peacefully, vs. throwing the country into serious unrest.
Indeed. How much longer is the US going to be a democracy (describing the US as a democracy is pretty generous)? The Turks voted recently to have their voting rights curtailed and as such entrench Erdogen as a dictator. As it is half your country doesn’t vote. Tick tock, tick tock.
You don’t recognise the predicament you and your fellow citizens are in?
PredictIt is a real-money political prediction market, a stock market for politics. A project of Victoria University of Wellington, PredictIt has been established to research the way markets can forecast future events. Our job is to study the wisdom of the crowd, yours is to use your skill and knowledge to get ahead.
Essentially, it’s like a stock market, except for predictions instead of material goods. I bet you could find a lot of people willing to short the position, “America will no longer functionally be a democracy in X years”, where X is any number less than, I dunno, 10. If you’re right, you could make a killing! And then use that money to move somewhere else.
If the US doesn’t remain a democracy we’ll all be dead within ten years. Money is the issue for your mindless and greed addled citizens.
The rest of us want you to get rid of the lunatic that passes for an intellectual in the eyes of Americans so the rest of us can get on with living decent lives.
