Assuming people or things are more professional or intricate than they are?

Is there a term for this? I have tended to do this my whole life as a kind of projection I guess, I assume others must be giving as much attention and thought to something as I would.

Think like people assuming police must be using DNA, forensics, and advanced computer algorithms to solve crimes when the reality is much more mundane and low tech.

I’ve busted people’s bubbles a couple of times myself, I once had a customer for a PC repair business that was absolutely shocked for failed hard drives we just took the old one out and put in a new one. She assumed we had some kind of crazy electronics lab in the back where we actually repaired things like HDs and RAM using all kinds of sophisticated equipment, it was a shock to hear it was all just basically modular replacement as almost all PC components are too complex to repair and not worth the money.

EDIT:Before someone accuses me of having a bloated sense of self competence, I mean a situation where you find out someone you assume put great thought and deliberation into a decision was basically just deciding on a whim.

I tend to believe that the opposite mistake is much more common : assuming that other people’s work is much easier and simpler than it really is.
