Does anyone know what comets were visible in May 1843?
I have a page from a family diary (My family were emigrating from scotland to Australia) which states: “A singular appearance of (unreadable)
Its station was low and had a tail of great length attached to it almost as bright as the rays of the sun, and continued visible till the 13th of May.
The same continued visible till the 21 of May 1843.”
It sounds extremely bright. Does anyone know of any daylight comets visible upon said dates?

That would be the “Great March Comet of 1843.” A Google search for “comet 1843” will bring up plenty of information about it.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
