I suppose you probably need a bit of exercise in there too.
Am I uncommonly morbid in that whenever I hear stuff like this, the first thing I wonder is how often and how much he craps? When they broke down his schedule I was thinking where’s all the bathroom time?!!
For a while when I was powerlifting I was throwing down somewhere in the neighborhood of 5000 to 6000 calories and that was really tough. The thought of eating twice that amount 1) makes my wallet cry and 2) makes my stomach hurt.
mrAru was a swimmer in HS, when I met him he had that funky long lanky rectabgle with shoulders that you see on the swimmers. It is a function of the motions of swimming working on specific muscle groups in a specific way.
I think there have been a number of studies that show women are particularly attracted to a triangular look (broad shoulders, tiny waist. Apparently it shows off good genes.
That’s why I try my best to stand in a triangular way when the hotties walk by
I have a question: I understand the guy is an olympian and he works out costantly every day so all that energy he consumes just gets turned into muscle: But what about cholesterol? What about saturated fat? What about all that processed sugar? Isn’t that stuff still unhealthy for him? Won’t he be at risk for heart disease/diabetes later on in his life? Or is all that working out (assuming he keeps it up/slows down his calorie intake as time goes by) nullify the bad stuff in that food?
If I can eat like that every day, I must just quit my job and excercise all day too
*Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, I’m not an actor who plays one on TV, and while I did pass high school Biology, I haven’t retained much. *
It depends what you consider “healthy food”. All of those things you’re listing as being bad for you are important for your body to have in some amount. Cholesterol, for instance, is vital for proper brain development, which is one of the reasons why a pregnant woman should never, ever take statins - she can easily cripple her child. Exercise also counteracts the bad effects of many or most of them, such as again raising the level of “good” cholesterol and dropping the level of “bad”. Phelps spends five+ hours a day in hard exercise even when he’s not training for the Olympics. It’s extremely doubtful that he’s doing himself any or very much harm as long as he doesn’t still eat like that once his career is over.
I was a bit skeptical that he really eats that much every day and expect the media is exagerating quite a bit for the story.
WebMD seems to agree article and says it’s probably more like 1/2 that (6000 calories).
I am biking across Canada next year and very much looking forward to being able to eat anything, everything, and in whatever quantity I want. Currently I am training part-time for my trip and on days when I go on long rides I return absolutely famished. People will be amazed at how much I eat. I’m 6’ tall and only 135 lbs, but when I’ve just biked 100 km I eat like a horse.
It’ll be nice next year to wake up, eat a full Denny’s style breakfast, pack down a full sub for lunch, and then double any order for dinner and still be able to build muscle and lose weight.
This article I just linked in the other Phelps thread has an amusing bit about reporters asking about his body shape:
reporter: “Can you give me two exercises people can do to get a swimmer’s type body?”
Phelps: “Well… they could swim.”
I also remember how much I could eat back when I was swimming competitively. One night I started supper early while my parents went to pick up my brother from his practice, 'cause I was starving. By the time they’d gotten back, I’d finished off the entire lasagna (intended for 4, + leftovers). They were mad, but decided to go get McDonald’s.
I made them bring me back a couple of Big Mac’s and fries. I have no problem believing that Phelps has to eat that much.
When I was in high school I ate 3-4k calories a day and I only worked out ~2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Those work outs were just soccer practice too, so there’s a lot of downtime. I’m sure his bas metabolism is pretty damn high anyway. I believe it.
