At sporting events, concerts etc. do you throw out all your trash or...

You are certainly making their work much harder and longer; and depending on their contracts, they might not get paid overtime, but rather, on cleaning their section.

Think about it: if every Person takes all their trash to the trash can, the cleaners empty the trash can and sweep the floor.

If nobody takes their trash to the trash can, but stuffs it under the seat, the cleaners have to bend down and pick the trash up into the bag they carry, before they can sweep the floor. So an additional hour or more, depending on the size of the area.
And even more time if the trash isn’t only lying beneath the seat on the floor, but stuffed in some crevice, because it takes longer to wrangle it from there.

You do know that the Prices for concession Food are not related to how many cleaning personnel is hired (or how well they are paid)? Usually, the owner of the Stadium sets the rent Price for the concession stand, which then have to recoup their cost by their Prices, balancing between “too high, nobody will buy” and “too low, we are in the red” (And additional: “we are basically a Monopol here, we can make a pile of Money”)

If you think the concession Price is too high, then don’t buy there, but don’t take your Anger out on the cleaners, who aren’t at fault at all.

I don’t know if you are being disingenious on purpose, but comparing real Restaurants with movie Theaters or Sport Stadiums is comparing apples to oranges.

Everybody knows that in Restaurants, your dishes will be taken away (and since it’s dishes, there’s no trash anyway).

In McD, for comparision, there are usually signs to “please bring your trash to the trash can”. If People ignore that, they have to hire extra People to clean, which raises the Price of the Food for everybody.

In movie Theaters, as others have said, cleaners come in for normal cleaning after it’s closed, so leaving trash during Shows means more work - unpaid- for People who have other things to do.

In Stadiums, when it’s cleaning companies, they don’t get overtime or extra pay. They have to clean their section, whether it’s 1 hour or 3 hours. So more work doesn’t mean more Money (actually less if calculated to hourly wage).

I’ve never seen a trash can at the exit doors of a theater or arena. It would be pretty obvious if 50 people were lined up throwing out trash as they exited the building.

I’ve always left popcorn or soda containers on the floor next to my seat. I try to keep them out of the way. Don’t want people knocking them over.

Otherwise I’d have to carry them all the way to the car. Then what? I don’t want that stuff spilling in my car.

How do you know which Stadium is which? Are there signs? Because I have never heard of “hosing down a Stadium” instead of picking up the trash before cleaning. I would assume hosing down solid trash would create a Problem for municipial waste water Treatment and the canals, because you’re not supposed to put solid things in waste water (except poop).

It’s still much easier for the cleaners to pick up all trash concentrated around a trash can than picking it up over several rows for each seat.

It’s Management that should put up more trashcans, not the cleaners at fault. But they are impacted by it.

In some places, trashcans were removed because of fear of bombs (e.g. London). That still doesn’t mean it’s okay to throw your trash on the ground, just that you walk a bit further.

Are there signs that it’s okay? Because otherwise, what is “customary” isn’t automatically right, or easy for the People who have to clean up after you.

That the Managers don’t care about how difficult the work for those at the bottom is doesn’t mean you should encourage it. Have you never encountered that attitude in your own Job? Did you like it?

What Kind of Restaurants do you eat at? I have never ever heard of this practise. “Restaurants” that are easy to use, like McD, don’t have table-cloths.

Restaurants that have table-cloths are careful both with the Cloth and the dishes, and have enough time to do it properly.

If I were sitting in a Restaurant and watching this behaviour, I would never go there again. If their waiters (or busboys, but we don’t really have those here) are so poorly trained, or in such a hurry, or disregard the good Cloth and fine dishes so Little, I do not trust them to have good Food, or give a good Dining experience.

I guess not told by cleaners. And “what everybody does” is not right. That’s why there were/ are campaigns against littering in General: some People think “everybody does it, it’s not a Problem” other People say “it’s gross and it is a Problem”.

Does she have any evidence for this, or is it just her opinion? Because I would want some official Statement by Management “Dear visitors, please leave your trash so we can hire 10 People instead of 5 and spend Money on wages for them”.

What the People doing the actual cleaning usually tell when asked by journalists is “We get paid terrible low wages to work per area* and the more trash, the more hours we Need. They don’t hire more People, and because the wage is fixed, we earn less (per hour) when there’s more trash”.

  • Even high-Price Hotels employ nowadays external cleaning Crews; to get around Minimum -wage laws, they changed it and pay each cleaner to do 6 rooms in 1 hour. Which Comes out to 10 min. So either the cleaner does a good Job, which means she will Need double the time, and effectivly be underpaid; or she does a half-assed Job because 10 min. for wiping down and cleaning the bathroom, plus vacuuming the bedroom, plus wiping down the bedroom, is not possible for normal People.

A lot of Managements don’t want the customers to see the cleaners, so the cleaners come in afterwards or before.

So tell Management. But leaving the trash because Walking a few Yards further is too much bother (Assuming you are not handicapped) means you are taking it out on the People on the low end of the ladder, not the ones responsible.

Have you activly looked for them, or just noted the lack of a line? Have you asked a Person working there?

I remember how surprised I was on one of my visits to London that there were no trash bins on the tube, so I asked somebody and was told that trash bins had been removed because of bombs. (Some cities are thinking about see-through bins).

That only meant I carried my trash a bit further.

Not necessarily. First, not everybody (as seen here) thinks of taking their trash, not everbody has trash (doesn’t buy at concession, or eats at concession and uses the trash can there).
Second, the design of the trash can has a lot do with it. If the opening is wide, People don’t Need to line up, they throw/ drop as they are passing.
It’s been some time since I was in a Cinema, and I didn’t buy at concession (I hardly do; I had brought my own stuff in my bag). If only every 4th or 5th Patron buys at concession, not many People would Need to bring their trash out.

If there’s Soda still left, they will be knocked over on the floor. And Soda on the floor is a real hassle because it’s sticky, both for the Patrons Walking through it, and extra time + effort for the cleaning Crew.

There are no trash cans in the whole car park, either? And if you don’t want it in your car, why are you okay with it Spilling in the Theater?

In my experience, there is a theater employee holding the door open for those of us leaving the theater, and there is a wheeled standard 55 gallon trash can next to the employee. Since we’re exiting single-file anyhow, it’s no problem to toss the trash in the bin as we walk past.

I haven’t been to a theater in quite a few years. They may have changed procedures.

After charging $20 for parking I’m not even sure I should have to get up to use the bathroom.

Well if everyone kept the theatre spotless the theatre wouldn’t have as many employees. I couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I knew I had gotten someone fired just because I couldn’t stand to leave a mess.

So did you skip all the previous answers in this thread of people who did work in cinemas/ theaters and said that there was no extra employee to clean up during the shows, only cleaners after it closed?

Look, if you want to be a jerk, own it. Say “I pay money, so I act like a jerk” (it’s still wrong, of course, but that’s apparently how a certain segment of the population thinks and acts).
But don’t hide behind flimsy excuses that are contradicted by reality.

If you have a mobility problem, I’d recommend an adult diaper or a wheelchair.

Also, if you are handicapped, why do you have to pay so much for parking?

Or is your handicap that you act like a jerk?

You know why movie theaters have sticky floors?
