Atheist Security Pass

Which shows that it’s possible to paint any related group with however large a brush one chooses.

Of course the link in the OP, as satirically funny as it was, did use a similar large brush to paint a picture of the faithful. In fact I think it was the premise of the joke (heh, heh… small ham sandwich… that part still makes me chuckle).

Not to justify such behavior, once the palette and brush size are laid out it’s up to each artist to choose their own composition. However, If I am to use the same brush size, color scheme, medium as another (in this case the linked satire), then although it may not be PC to do so, I may just feel free to continue with the same theme.

The “free pass” only comes into play in the light of commonality and presentation; I doubt it would fly very far as part of an OP or keystone of an argument.

heh, heh… small ham sandwich… That part kills me :stuck_out_tongue: .

Yup. He tries, but they sneak back in, Wickin and wick out.

Not their hands, other people’s - the hands of those who offend their atheist sensibilities by saying things like “Bless you!” in their presence. Or something like that. If it ever happened at all.

Once again I marvel at the reasoned, informed, dispassionate discourse atheists and theists so often engage in.

Well, just so there will be some kind of ignorance fighting going on here, what the heck is the hand-stabbing thing about? I never heard of it. 'Splain? Please?

Supposedly someone said “God Bless you!” to Madelyn Murray O’Hair, O Most Holy of Holies (that’d be irony) and she stabbed said person in the hand. Because she didn’t want to be wished god bless you. And so rabid atheists* apparently stab hands all the time. I’ll look for a snopes link.

*That article hurt me. Now “atheist” looks wrong no matter how I spell it.

No, no, that’s not it at all! MMO’H was so moved by having God’s blessings bestowed upon her that she gave the blesser stigmata.

Thank [del]God[/del] random chance.

I thought we were supposed to stab our own hands.

It’s particularly offensive because:

  1. MMO’H was particularly wacky and about as good a representative for atheists as Bobby Fischer was for chess players

  2. If it even happened, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds, since the offending “weapon” was a pencil

  3. It might not have even happened

It took me a while to figure this out.

So I guess the point is that only religious folk are ever dangerous and violent.

 That’s really silly, guys.

And the article wasn’t even particularly well-executed.

You better believe that’s a stabbin’

I thought it was funny, and I stab hands daily.

In Bobby Fischer’s defense, he was a pretty good representative of chess players, just not of human beings.

By contrast, while I know that Bobby Fischer was a nutbar and a brilliant chess player, I only know that MMO’H was a nutbar.

What was her ACTUAL job/position/station/identifier other than rabid atheist?

I’ve stabbed my own hand a number of times: screwdrivers, utility knives, and drillbits find their way into my hands with disturbing regularity.

I am an athiest, but more to the point, I am a lousy carpenter.

Well, she was a marine - but had an affair with a married guy who wouldn’t leave his wife.

Um, she was a socialist and tried to defect - but the Soviet Union turned her down.

She was a speech writer - for Larry Flynt’s presidential campaign.

She was a psychiatric social worker for a lot of years - but is aparently known for advocating free sex amongst sixth graders.

Perhaps she is best known for having prayer and bible reading banned in public schools. Two very dangerous activities, I mean the bible is widely regarded as mythology and has no place in public school, not like the heroic tales of Zeus and Thor whose tales are more than appropriate for public school study.

In retrospect she was also a murder victem - but had to be identified by her prostethic hip because her killer chopped her up but good. Probably shouldn’t have stabbed David’s hand.

Well, if you’re happy and you know it…

I agree, it can be very upsetting when someone broad-brushes you with guilt-by-association, based on the actions of extremists whose ideals you do not support and whose actions you would never emulate.

That didn’t happen in this thread though, although I think it might have occurred once or twice somewhere else.

Well, it’s not that big of a deal. It just kind of bothers me that handstabber tends to get a pass here while most other derisive generalizations get pounced on like a poodle in a wolverine pit.

It is not a generalisation.

It’s the opposite of a generalisation - it’s a specific qualifier.

FUCK! I suck at allusions so hard.

Really? A poodle in a wolverine pit? Let’s all start a thread in GD titled “Der Trihs - Have you heard the Good News?” and see how far that flys.

Note - I respect DT for his beliefs and his rights to them as much as anybody else, I only mention him as an example of one of the more verbal members of the AT side of the debate. I could just as easily mention two or three members of the T side of the debate whose values and beliefs I do not share even though I hold claim to that side of the issue. No disrespect intended or implied.
