Atheistfellowship.com - is this guy for real?

Now I’m bound to be biased in the opposite direction, but it seems to me that there’s not a terrific amount of free thought going on here - I see a great deal of assumption of the conclusion, plus some very wooly stuff like:

and::

So is this guy for real? (is he really as well known and widely respected as he would have us believe? are his credentials real?)

As I said; I cannot be regarded as unbiased in these matters, but it seems to me that the good doctor is not nearly as open-minded as he would like to think.

Anyone who feels the need to place the letters PhD after his name at the end of every single article (and decorate them with wav files) should be viewed with a healthy dose of scepticism. If he feels that he needs to impress us with his qualifications, then I doubt that the arguments themselves will be all that impressive…

I must admit that I didn’t read too much of his site - there is only so much piped music one can stand

Grim

Ya see, this is why I never joined the American Atheist’s Society, or whatever Madalyn Murray O’Hair’s organization was called. I ordered some of their brochures, and found them to be just as humorless and hate-filled and insanely small-minded as the worst religious fanatics.

This guy is an embarassment to himself. I am a very staunch atheist/humanist and I can’t reconcile a lot of his beliefs because they’re defended (and not proposed) by anger and then ramble on without a point. Some of them barely make cohesive sense, I can only wonder what his doctorate looked like.
Example 1:
http://www.atheistfellowship.com/aa2/3.html
Since the carnage at the World Trade Center, the three patriarchal gods are taking sides. The anti-American Moslems say their god, Allah, is on their side; the Jews pray to their god, Jehovah, who had promised them three thousand years ago to be on their side; the Christians who say, “God bless America,” are going to look to Jesus to bless America.

“The government called on “psychics” during the cold war. It seems that since they had been so successful then, they will be called on again to foretell which god will now be the most efficacious.”
-Newton Joseph,Ph.D.

Geez, Newt, if you have a point, you care to share it with the rest of us? What are you trying to say?

Example 2
http://www.atheistfellowship.com/aa2/56.html
WHO SAID WHAT TO WHOM?
“When we interact with others, we exchange ideas, philosophies, stories, and information. Because of the complexity of the brain, one of the points made repeatedly by researchers is that we lose source memory quickly, and while we may remember something as familiar, we may easily attribute the wrong source to our memory (for example, incorrectly remember that something we read about actually happened to us.) So, what did Jesus, Paul, Moses and the menagerie of biblical characters really say? So, who said what to whom?”
Newton Joseph, Ph.D.

Ok NJ, You’re proposing that these things WERE said but that it’s impossible to accurately pinpoint it to one person. Fine, I’ll buy that, but let’s throw in your point. Why should this matter? Why should we care if it’s all false anyway? Who starts their sentences properly with a subordinating conjunction?!?!?

Another thing, I can tell that he didn’t get his PhD in Web design either. What a mess.

That’s just my opinion. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I’ve never heard of the guy, and I thought I’d read all of the major atheist/freethought authors. You are correct to point out the hypocrisy of endorsing freethought simultaneously with endorsing the eradication of certain kinds of thought. I’m not an atheist, but I respect most of the atheists I know and have heard of…but this guy is rather embarrassing.

Look kids: Anyone saying that Jesus and his Jewish father had
something to do with Gene Ray’s birth, is a damn evil liar.
http://timecube.com/index6.html:

“You Word-Murder Your Children.” Just stop it already. Geez.

—but this guy is rather embarrassing.—

Not half as embarrasing as this guy is for Christians.
http://www.jesus.com/

Oh I’m not so sure Apos; Phelps is an embarrasment; Chick is an embarrasment but that’s just a slightly effeminate-looking guy dressing up as Euro-Jesus for a laugh he’s only embarrassing himself (maybe).

I stumbled across Newton Joseph on one of those sites that was stealing posts from the SDMB; he is very strange.

I’m agnostic and I’m not a big fan of religion, but this guy is pushing things way too far. Here’s an example:

If you click on “Sermons”, you get a pop-up ad window for a baseball cap that says “Jesus hates you.” I somehow doubt that the proprietor of jesus.com is a Christian.

That Jesus.com dude is an ‘old ways’ pagan.

You mean he worships Zeus or Apollo and makes semi-regular sojourns to the Parthenon?

Nah. I think he sets up the ol’ hollow cow suit and hopes Zeus comes lookin’ again.
