Why do athletes put a dash of dark paint on their cheek bones? i have been told that this is to reduce the amount of light that would be reflected into their eyes when they look up and try to catch a ball. This explanation sounds dubious to me.
Personally I think this is an emulation of warriors going into battle with their faces painted to intimidate.
Anyone has the answer?
thks.
the face paint under the eyes does help in reducing the reflection of light off the face. But many wear it regardless of the weather conditions. I have had teamates who made triangles and other shapes on their face to add to that “game face” look.
thks lax wolf. But I doubt the rationale of reducing reflection. Anyone else has an answer/opinion?
The paint works. Go here to read about a Yale University study on the subject.

That seems to settle the question.
That’s what we’re here for…BTW welcome to the boards both of you!
The paint (or tape in some cases) is primarily for absorbing light, that’s why you see it in football as well as baseball. Some football players added to it for personal ego/intimidation/marketing. The “warrior paint” that evolved (triangles, etc.) are just overrated defensemen trying to get an edge. See: Chris Hovan
