Atlanta Dopers -- Suggestions for family/non family activities?

Ya might wanna report this thread to a mod, since it seems your OP got et.

Hmm, I think someone forgot to feed the server…it seems to be eating a lot of OPs.

Glory be! There’s a first time for everything. Well, let’s start again.

Since the Atlantianites held a dopefest during one of the 51 weeks in 2002 I won’t be in Atlanta, I’m looking for other fun family to do/see and non-family things to do/see/copulate with while I’m there next week. I’ll be toting the 8-year-old Boy of Joy with me, and will be staying with my sister and her three young daughters. We’re already set for a trip to Turner Field to watch the Cubbies spank the Braves, and will be heading to a waterpark at some point, but beyond that, we’re open to suggestions. Friday night my sister and I will be getting our booze on, so any ideas on where to do that would be greatly appreciated.

well, there are lots of things to do here, especially in the drinking category.

stone mtn. is fun and will kill the whole day, and a little cheaper than six flags, although six flags is, i believe, right next to the water park (don’t drink the water at the water park  ). there is some new stuff at stone mtn. this year, we haven’t been since they opened their new ‘town’ thing that is a recreation of colonial times, but the great barn is a three story barn full of foam fruit you can throw and shoot, and is generally entertaining for any kid. plus, they have a cable car to the top of the mtn. and a train around the mtn. piedmont park is holding gay pride this weekend, probably not so many kids there for that, but i could be wrong. the zoo is fun too, and rather small for a zoo, and they have pandas! and you can actually see them this year (the lines have been so long in the past it was rediculous).

what kinds of drinking do you want to do? sports bar? dancing? meat(meet?) market? lots of all of the above… i like the local tavern types myself, unknown bands playing, trivia, ect. i know of a few in the midtown area…

Last time I was in Atlanta, I went to the Puppetry Museum and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was so fun! They had displays of puppets from around the world, exhibits on the cultural/religious meanings of puppets, the history of puppetry, how to make puppets, and a big interactive where you could play with different kinds of puppets, including some Jim Henson ones yourself. Definitely a good family activity.

Thanks! *jwhee, last time we were in Kennesaw we went to Stone Mountain, and we really dug it. This was a while back though, so if there’s new stuff maybe we can make another trip.

*burundi…a Pupetry Museum! That is the coolest thing ever. That’s absolutely on the list. Thanks!

That was the worst post I’ve ever made.

I didn’t even finish! I was just previewing!

ANYway…

jwhee – drinking. I’m open to anything. My sister’s and my musical tastes are somewhat divergent (she likes bad music, and I don’t) so live music is probably not the best idea.

I had a very long reply in my mind, but then I read this line and starting laughing hysterically… I forgot everything else I was going to say.

OK, OK … I’ll play nice:

Family stuff: The already mentioned Stone Mountain, Zoo, Center for Puppetry Arts (Paging Mr FIVER … Mr Fiver, Please come to forum 4), White Water and Six Flags. Some other less likely but still feasible possibilities –

Cyclorama and Civil War Museum
The Botanical Gardens
World of Coke
Boozin Stuff:

There’s really just too much here to begin to even tell you where to start, unless you narrow down what you’re looking for. I guess we could just point you in the direction of The Chamber.

Is that the Friday game? I’m heading to it (ok, my friend wants to go - I’m not even sure who they’re playing. But I’m only going because I should go to Turner field before the move.

mouthbreather:

What?

My sister went to Atlanta with her family recently, and we’re thinking of meeting there for Christmas next year.

Anyway, she said her kids found the CNN tour to be interesting. Actually, I believe the grownups liked it too.

GAH! Shortly after my last post in this thread, I abandoned the Internet for about a week and a half. So I didn’t see some of these posts in time for the trip. Anyhoo, Lsura, we were at the Thursday game…sadly. But the fireworks sure were nice. So the we’ll have to watch the Cubbies spank the Braves at home tonight. Hey, they swept Florida! And I’d like a pony!

We didn’t get to do much neato stuff, like the Puppetry Center (last time we were there we saw the World of Coke and Stone Mountain), but agreed that it would definitely be on the agenda next time, and so would…The Chamber! (da da da daaaaaa!)

CrankyAsAnOldMan:

Yes!

Oh wait. Christmas 2002 or 2003?

Either way…yes!
