I just found out that they are once again going to try to do Atlas Shrugged into a movie. According to the article and the IMDB, they are casting Angelina Jolie as Dagny.
I know lots of people don’t particularly like the book or the author, but of those that do, do you see Dagny as the Angelina Jolie type?
This is the first time I hoped an ATLAS movie project fall through. I’m sure Ayn would approve of Angelica as Dagny. Hell, she saw Farrah Fawcett as a possible Dagny in the late 70s. (She also saw Raquel Welch as a possibility, and I do agree there.)
Anyway, Angelina is just… too much. I’d prefer a Jennifer Connelly or a Natalie Portman.
Wynona Ryder is a remote contender. Back before Striptease and The Scarlet Letter, I’d have even seen Demi Moore as an OK Dagny.
I don’t see Angelina Jolie as a railroad tycoon, no.
I could see casting Cate Blanchett or Kate Winslet, possibly Kiera Knightly. I’ve never seen Jennifer Connelly act terribly tough, so I don’t much see her in the role but I can’t think of any American actresses who can play dominating parts and are also young (Mary McDowell when she was younger would have been wonderful.)
The IMDB page indicates while it seems to be a one-shot movie, not the first of two or three, it ends with John Galt entering the picture, so I’m hoping that it really is the first of several. Also, that Dr. Robert Stadler and Cheryl Taggart will not be in it. Well, you don’t need them in the first movie, but they’ll be majorly missed if they do more without them.
I balked at the thought of Cate, but then I remembered her wonderful Kate Hepburn in The Aviator. Now, I’m sold, but I think Dagny would be prettier. Kate Winslet is interesting in a good way- I just never thought of her.
It’s really out of her usual area, but I can totally see Dagny as a Tina Fey-type.
