Here’s Cecil’s article on this very topic:

By the way - There’s no such thing as an ATM Machine.

because - ATM is an acronym for Automatic Telling Machine.
So by calling it an ATM Machine you are actually calling it an Automatic Telling Machine Machine.
Kinda redundant huh? And likewise your PIN number is actually a Personal Identification Number Number

>> ATM is an acronym for Automatic Telling Machine

Is that so? And in what way is the machine “telling”?

OOps - I checked it again. It’s Automatic TELLER Machine.
You dont need to go to the Teller inside the branch because there is an Automatic one outside? Get it?

My friend’s parents from middle school (my friend, not his parents) were some kind of administrators for a major local hospital. They once said that the hospital had (by some sort of mandate) Braille on the exit signs above the doors (the red ones about 8 feet up in the air)… Obviously this is in response to section 8 of the ADA which states that public buildings must not only be accessible to the visually challenged, but the gravitationally challenged as well

Yeah, there are legendary stories about idiotic braille implementations. I heard that the new FDR Memorial in Washington DC has a braille inscription on it. Except it’s behind a rail, up at about 8 feet tall so everyone can see it. And even stupider, the braille characters are about 1 foot tall. I don’t know if this is true, maybe a DC doper can check it out and confirm.

This is known as Redundant Acronym Syndrome or RAS Syndrome  if you like.

Since the OP’s been answered and following on the redundancies…
We have a nice swimming area on the east coast of Florida named ‘Playalinda Beach’.
Translated: ‘Beautiful Beach Beach’.

Actually somewhat getting back to the OP:

What is the braille wording for “Emergency phone” (on an elevator, with the “Close door” and other buttons - the dot pattern I’ve seen certainly does not look like it is long enough to spell out the words. Is there a shorthand in braile as there is in ASL?

OOh! OOh! I live in Iowa, so I hear this a lot: “Would you like that with Au Jus sauce?” AAAgh!! Controlling fist of death…

Maybe the manufacturer of the keyboards doesn’t want to make one without the braille bumps. A smooth keypad would require another stockroom location along with another part number to keep track of. There would also always be the chance of a non braille keypad being installed by mistake at a walk up location leading to a lawsuit over being in non compliance with the ADA legislation.

One word: Lawyers.

I agree, it’s silly. But it has to be there.

Raving Nude Hermit has a point. (I never thought I would utter that phrase.)

I mean, all ATMs are pretty much the same. Why say, “well, if blind people can’t drive, then we WON’T HAVE TO WASTE THE MONEY TO MAKE THOSE LITTLE PLASTIC BUMPS! WOOHOO!”
