And that, BigT, is prejudice. Not (necessarily) by Starving Artist, but by the conservatives who believe the worst conservative is better than the best liberal.
Of course not. That’s inaccurate.
Everyone south of the Mason-Dixon line is an *inbred, incest-practicing, racist, xenophobic, intolerant, superstitious, hypocritical, obese, short-tempered, gun-loving, willfully *ignorant rube.
I kid. I kid.
Dude, wtf is wrong with you?
They’re genuinely ignorant.
Everybody’s genuinely ignorant about something. However, there’s a difference when you deliberately choose to remain that way and are proud about it.
Anyway, I’m really in no position to run down and stereotype the South like that. I live right next to Idaho for God’s sake. Idaho has earned an unfortunate reputation of being a northwestern version of Alabama, Mississippi, et al., only without (in reference to this thread) BBQ. Although it is less hyper-religious than the South. I will give the state credit for that.
Do they still get to call us elite, ivory tower intellectual, socialist, communist, Nazi, carpet bagging, baby killers?
Does what they call you actually hurt your chances of being heard?
Not if they want to have any credibility at all, no. Stereotyping people and calling them names portrays the height of ignorance. Don’t you agree?
Alabama. What the hell did you expect? And who cares?
I’m glad I live in a very blue city. But prove to me how the earth and the universe was created. Really prove it!
The big bang makes as much sense to me as God created the world in six days and he rested on the seventh.
Why do you all care so much?
Some sort of false equivalency?
Seriously? We’re running full bore into a future overwhelmingly shaped and defined by science and it’s technological wonders and you’re questioning why it may be preferable to have someone aligned with a scientific world view instead of a series of bronze age nomadic stories?
As for cosmology vs. genesis and your relative inability to see a difference…well you should look into that.
Beside’s Grey’s excellent points, if you don’t care about this ignorance remaining unfought, you’re kinda on the wrong website.
So do I, and I’m right in the middle of Alabama.
Also, if you want to accuse states of electing reactionary, fundamentalist douchebags to public office, you’re going to have to include a lot of non-Southern states.
I live in Georgia, and all I have to say is a heartfelt, "Thank you Alabama, thank you for taking on the incredible task of making my elected officials, idiots that many of them are, look good in comparison to yours – and succeeding so brilliantly!
You guys must bow to South Carolina and praise its name.
So if I say that Harvard PHD graduates are smarter than janitors, I’m prejudiced, right? OMG I said one group has a trait with a higher average than another!
You’re twisting the insult to be overly broad (no one here suggested that every single individual Alabaman is stupid) in order to refute it, because you can’t actually refute what was said. Alabamans, on average, are indeed more ignorant than the rest of the country, at least on the matters we’re speaking of.
Is that some sort of excuse? Explaining their flawed logic as to why they came to hold their stupid position somehow justifies that stupidity? How far can you take this? If a Republican advocates that Christianity be the state religion under punishment of death for non-believers, is it ok if they vote for that guy too, because while they may not fully agree, at least he’s not a librul?
Which of the several lines of evidence would do it for you? Or do you need a mr. wizard style experiment where something changes color?
Yep, well, you’re ignorant. You might as well tell us that it makes as much sense to you that airplanes stay in the sky because we’ve made offersing to the invisible flying spirits than accepting the science of aerodynamics. You’re in the wrong place.
Because this leads to shit like kids being taught incorrect things in school about how the world works, it leads to an environment of extreme religious motivation where all sorts of hateful, ignorant shit will go down, etc.
I’m from NYC but I now live in Texas. Part of me wants to ridicule the people of the south and the other part wants to look to the good stuff(like the fact that these “ignorant rubes” feed America).
Luckily I just ate so I feel comfortable in laughing at backwards Alabama right now.
It will not be possible to prove it to you because you are too stupid to know the difference between the big bang, an explanation of the the beginning of the universe, and evolution, an explanation for the origins of species thought descent with modification.
No not really. I think the height of ignorance is deliberately ignoring facts that interfere with your world view. Calling people names just makes you a dick. Stating out loud what you think about someone, without calling them names, is just impolite. Calling someone out when they take part in behavior that harms society is a good thing.
Not only that, we are communicating on media that propagates at near light speed showing that stars would have had to been created with their light rays in mid-flight. The technology used in computers relies on quantum effects such as quantum tunneling.
So just the fact that you can spread such ignorant drivel depends on a consistent model of the universe that actually works in real life.
