Opps I’m female by the way, everyone always assumes I’m male for some reason.
Gee, I always thought I’d LOVE to be 5’10". I don’t know why, but 5’10" has just always seemed like a kick-ass height.
As it is, I stay 5’7" and wear platform flip-flops (Red. Velvet. Yum.). Despite the fact that my weak ankles often cause me to fall off of the suckers, after reading this thread, it seems I’ve got it easy.
Doesn’t J.Crew do tall stuff?
Because, Daftbugger, we’re all supposed to wear 4" heels with everything, yea, even jeans and combat pants. Or have reeeeaaalllllyyyy long legs to start with.
My long torso swimsuit has died. I hope the shop where I got it years ago (BHS) still does long torso swimmies.
(Did Zenster read the OP? I thought it was kind of odd to console a tall lady who was complaining about finding pants long enough,by telling her how all the men love a teeny weeny itty bitty lady. He must have just not read the OP.)
Even with heeled boots, I still end up looking like a 15 year old with really baggy pants!
Quit the crying. You are blessed, not cursed and need an attitude change, NOT a height change.
mmm… tall women…
I’ve sent an email to an ex-girlfriend (6’2") who works in the clothing industry to see if she has suggestions.
mmm… short women…
A lady I went out with for a while was pretty short; she shopped in the Boys department when she needed things like jeans and denim jackets.
Oh my sisters! I’m a shade over 5-9 and while I can occasionally find pants of adequate length, it’s the shirt sleeves that wound me. Now, my wrists are quite comely I assure you, but having them always be exposed makes me feel like orangutan woman. I recently heard that Old Navy makes sleeves of adequate length, but I’m skeptical now, given what fizgig has to say!
Philster, what’s up with you?
raises an eyebrow We aren’t complaining about being tall we are complaining about having a hard time finding clothes. Unless you really want to see a really tall chick running around in too small clothing in the dead of a -40 winter (Oh wait, some guys up here do)
Too harsh, Philster - ease up. My wife is 6’1" and has a 37" inseam - you try buying pants that fit without leaving them unhemmed. It is hard and a pain. She was that tall at age 13, and weighed about 115 lbs. - nope, not teased at all (right). No chance of developing a stigma there, nope.
Sure, being tall has a lot of positives (I’m 6’4" and really like it, thank you), but it has a number of difficulties, and is particularly hard for women who want to dress nicely…
She also likes Old Navy and Nordstrom, and looks for trunk sales…Tall Girl does not excite her.
I’ve always dreamed of being tall…say, 5’10". As long as they can find the length, the tall girls look fantastic in flowy dresses and skirts. Mmmm…flowy silk. Flowy is good.
May I please join the rant? Pretty please?
I’ve gone through all the phases of clothes buying - particularly for jeans. I reached 6’ when I was 11-12 years old, and now at 30+ I’m as tired of the hassle as you are.
Special order from Land’s End? Done that - most recently the quality of their denim has suffered, and their “fits” have gone awry from mine. J. Crew, etc.? Please! Most places “tall” or “long” is 32". I just love looking in the L.L. Bean catalog, seeing lovely khakis or wool pants, reading the sizes, and seeing that their “tall” has a 32" inseam. Thanks folks for your creative use of the word “tall”. Only 4" short, giving an interesting version of work attire.
Saving grace for jeans has been Gap. Used to like their women’s tall styles - boot cut is so comfy. But what in the world were they thinking>? Last time I checked every pair of women’s jeans had come to be infested with “stretch”. It’s like putting on a denim plastic bag. But the Easy fit men’s jeans (as well as many others) are another story. Come up to 37" inseam at a variety of waist sizes. Can’t get the long ones in stores, but can order them all online. I go to a store, try them on for waist size, and then order the ones I want online. Works like a charm.
I was startled to find a pair of long slacks at Lerner of NY. Well, startled that they were actually long enough.
Do not get me started on long sleeve shirts…
Don’t start me on shirts either. As I’m rather well endowed, ALL shirts gape. If a get one in a large size, it billows around my waist, making me look really fat! Not very flattering!
I feel your pain MercyStreet. (I’m a 6’8" guy.) I’ve come to terms with the fact that I can’t really go clothes shopping, per se, in the sense of strolling through stores, choosing articles of clothing that catch my fancy. Rather, I stomp into Eddie Bauer and buy every XL-tall shirt that isn’t hideous, stomp into shoe store after shoe store to try on the one pair of shoes they accidentally made in size 15, and then stomp home to buy unhemmed pants from the Eddie Bauer catalogue. When they arrive, I stomp over to a tailor and explain that I need a 1/8" hem put on the pants and to stop giggling, please.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Giraffe has every quality I could want in a wife, except for height. She’s a lovely 5’6", which is great, but I had always secretly hoped to marry someone 6’2", so we could go to playgrounds and frighten the children together.
I would like to express my deepest appreciation of all you tall women out there. It’s hard for us tall (6’5"ish) guys to find women who we can look in the eye without having a permanently cricked neck. Who we can kiss goodnight without having her stand on a stair or stepstool. Who we can walk along and hold hands with without a thirty-degree list to port.
Tall women. I’m glad you’re here and I love ya all.
I think tall chycks are sexy. This still applies if they are wearing jeans or track suits, but a lot of them manage to dress pretty fashionably too. So there must be someplace to get a lousy pair of pants besides Tall Girl. And I think your creative mind could probably figure out how to put that bag inside another one if you don’t want that publically emblazoned on your bag – I see remarkably few people carrying around incontinence store bags.
Now where did you say these too-tall women were attacking?
I’m a short tall girl ie 5’10" (which means I just qualify for the Tall Persons society). (But wearing my summer sandals I’m 6’1")
I pretty much stick with the stores I know that make clothing long enough. The Laura chain in Canada and the related chains as well as the Nygaard labels work well for me for work clothes.
And fortunately I like wearing miniskirts so that expands the number of stores I go to.
I have also found a place that sells nice wrap around (Sarong style) summer skirts that are one size fits all and cut long!
What I hate are stores/labels that assume as you get taller, you get wider. It can be a challenge to fine a nice fitting top with long enough sleeves.
And don’t even get me started on one-size fits all … have you ever been stuck having to wear those horrid one size fits all pantyhose. I swear I cannot get the crotch pulled up higher than mid thigh, which leaves me fidgeting all day.
I’m just feeling tough-lovish today.
I’m a big fan of tall women.
Continue.
What he said. (from another 6’5" guy)
Ditto here, from yet another 6’5" guy (my SO is 5’11"-ish).
My wife is 5"7’. I love her anyway.
