Attention baseball fans!

This holiday season, my parents gave me Red Smith On Baseball, published by Ivan R. Dee Publishers.

I recommend it most highly for anyone who enjoys the game, enjoys good writing, and especially enjoys good writing on the game of baseball.

Smith was a sports journalist based in New York for decades, and is generally regarded as one of the finest in a very fine lot. Find this book and read it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it for the sense of history as well as the excellent writing.

Thanks for the tip, Dave-Guy - I’ll check that book out. I’m a sucker for anything baseball.

Wasn’t Red Smith an official scorer as well?

I believe that sportswriters are often assigned the duty of official scorer, so that’s a real possibility. Wouldn’t surprise me, at any rate.

The job of scorer is often rotated among the beat writers, particularly in larger cities with multiple papers.
