Attention Battlestar Galactica Fans

Ron Moore’s new show, Virtuality, begins this summer (June 26, actually) on FOX.

“…and their voyage is also being taped for a reality TV show back on Earth.”

Holy crap does that sound incredibly shitty.

And you expected something else?

So, we’ve got a really cool concept, Earth’s first starship… and the show’s going to be about one of the worst parts of Star Trek. Bravo, Moore.

It’s not really “starting.” The pilot wasn’t picked up, but FOX paid for it, so they’re airing it. It’s conceivably possible that if it does gangbusters when it’s aired they’ll order more episodes, but that doesn’t really happen, and it’s likely that a lot of those involved have moved on to other projects already for next year.

The resolution of Battlestar Galactica was such a disappointment to me that I am going to avoid all of Ron Moore’s projects in the future.

Where were you when I stood alone in the BG thread?

You have a space mission that will last years, (any interstellar mission without ftl, even with time dialation) and for all that time the people carrying it out will be locked in a habitat the size of a house with nothing to really do until they get to their destination. Virtual reality is practically the only way they could not go raving mad. You could make a decent point about what it means to the human condition for people to withdraw from physical reality- especially in an environment so deprived that that might be the lesser of two evils. I can see this as a movie but I have no idea how you could stretch it into a series.

I dunno, I think it could work. They could visit a Nazi Germany simulation. Or maybe one week it would be like a Gangland Chicago adventure. Then another time, they could reenact the Shootout at the OK Corral…

It sounds awful, but at least it doesn’t say it’s going to explore religion.

Think of the possibilities where their virtual reality fails!
Which programs will we believe to be “real” and discover at the end that it is VR?

Which calls to mind the final episode of the American version of

Life on Mars.

I’m trying to decide which is a way to write yourself out of a hole, a holo desk or acts of god…

I can’t remember if I posted anything in that thread or not–I may have even posted something favorable. I had mixed feelings after first viewing the finale–it did pack an emotional punch for me–but my worst fears were confirmed with the God-did-it non-explanation and the more I thought about it later the angrier I became at all the wasted potential.
Ah, well. At least it saved me a little money and time by not buying the BSG DVD’s. As great as a lot of the episodes are, I don’t have the stomach to watch them again knowing how it all gets flushed down the toilet in the end. :frowning:

I deleted episodes from the DVR that I hadn’t burned yet. Since I’m apparently unable to capture Ron Moore and pour melted DVDs down his throat, I’ll probably give the DVDs I burned away. Perhaps I’ll go skeet shooting.
