Attitudes about Gardassil for men

I recent found out from here among other sites that Gardasil has been approved for men. This is great news, but it has me wondering-

Would conservatives have the same opposition to immunizing boys from a virus that could cause cancer in women? Something tells me they’d be more ok with it, for two reasons-

1.) Its assumed ‘boys will be boys’ even to conservative groups; immunizing them is protecting them from the inevitable.

2.) HPV can give men penile cancer. The idea of getting penile cancer I think stirs up a lot of ‘castration anxiety’ type feelings in some men, and thus would maybe seem to be a ‘big problem’.

But even if they imposed some sort of sexual double standard, the more people that get immunized the better. I joked with a friend that the fear of getting penis cancer would probably lead to a lot of HPV strains going extinct from all the paniced men :stuck_out_tongue:

OK, hold on just a minute there, mate. That’s, at best, the Cliff’s Notes version of medicine. Yes, you’ve managed to avoid the stupid anti-vaccine side, but only by going too far in the other direction. Vaccines are serious medicine, and there’s still problems with any and every vaccine.

Gardasil’s side effects are not predictable, and the things it protects against are uncommon at worst and treatable in other ways. It offers few benefits to most men, and there are small but non-trivial risks. Even the level that it actually compares to the risk of cervical cancer is somewhat disputed: it’s probably a good idea, but not a trivial decision. I’m not at all sure that there’s good data to support rolling this out to men (actualy, boys more likely). People who frequently have sexual relations, particularly high-risk forms, may have a good reason to get it. I don’t think it’s wise to rush into supporting that with mass immunization, particularly because the vaccine only lasts a few years!

Second, I do have a problem with people being forced to have anything which is not absolutely neccessary. I don’t even support people being forced to have the standard vaccines as long as they aren’t going to public schooling or whatnot. Granted, it may be wise anyway, but I won’t force them. I don’t support people being vaccinated for other’s sake; even common MMR vaccines are intended to benefit the individual as much as the statistical group.
