Auburn/Oregon live discussion (BCS Championship)

Well, since Oregon’s previous drives ended with Safety, Punt, Punt, Downs, Punt and Punt…I’ll stick with Miracle.

Then why do you keep bringing up that the 4th & goal attempts last night failed? That fact tells us really very little about whether going for it was the right decision.

More to the point: in your opinion, how likely were those 4th & goal attempts to have been successful? In the NFL, 4th & Goal from the 2 is converted about 43% of the time. Unless you have reason to believe that Auburn and Oregon were much less likely than that to convert from the 1, then there’s really no way for kicking to have been the right decision.

Wow..an offense that averages just a hair under 50 points a game putting a clutch drive together and adding a two point conversion to boot against a defense that ranks 54th nationally in points allowed is no miracle. Dyer not leaving the ball on the ground when he thought the play was over (as did every player on the field) then running for another much needed 30 yards is far closer to a miracle.
I can’t figure out why S.E.C fans can’t even acknowledge that there’s great teams outside their conference and throw around terms like “miracle”.
And what about T.C.U.? I can’t help but notice no one at ESPN nor S.E.C. Fans wanna touch the fact that T.C.U. Also finished undefeated and also won a major BCS bowl game proving they can play with big boys…anyone?

TCU should have been in that game. College football needs some kind of a playoff system, even it’s only two rounds.

Oh, and I will accept the word of thsoe who say that the championship game was not representative of the kind of player Cam Newton is, but he still struck me as nervous.

You’re obviously new around here.

The current system is a playoff, a two team playoff. 20 yrs ago, it was a vote.

The system to determine the national champion is not at all much different. Every year there is about 4 to 6 teams jockeying around the top of the polls with a couple faves…and some years pre-BCS there was a finisher few could dispute and some years it came down to voting between undefeated teams. Since the B.C.S was instituted it has only changed one facet of the post season…guaranteeing that the #1 and #2 “ranked” teams play each other…but at times like this year it failed to determine an undisputed champion.

And the myth that the whole season is a playoff is a farce. Let’s not forget how L.S.U. Backed into the B.C.S championship game with “two regular season losses” s few years ago and drew a highly over ranked Ohio State team. Even this year Espn was lobbying that if Auburn or any other one loss S.E.C team should get a spot in the championship…so let’s drop the whole season is 0a playoff bit. And let’s not forget Les Miles proclamation that “the highest ranked team from the S.e.C should get an automatic spot” in the championship.
Love how S.e.C fans throw that bit around as long as they have one undefeated team but quickly throw around other reasons when its not the case.
If the whole season is a playoff then the season is not over…let Auburn and T.C.U tee it up!

And an Auburn-TCU match-up next week would also be a two team playoff.

On what planet is the system not ‘much different’ than it was 20 yrs ago.

If the same rules were in effect this year as they were 20 years ago, Oregon would have gone to the Rose Bowl and played Wisconsin (or Michigan St).

And Auburn would be playing the Sugar Bowl possibly playing Stanford.

TCU would be in the Cotton Bowl, my guess playing one of the Big 10 one loss teams.

Oklahoma would be in the Orange Bowl, probably playing Va Tech.

The system is entirely different than 20 yrs ago.

And if Oregon, Auburn and TCU all won, what would have happened?

Clever about the “two team playoff” thing, but you have to know it’s inadequate.

Stanford, Oregon, Ohio State, and (of course) Auburn are all better than TCU. I agree the NCAA needs a playoff, but I don’t think a plus one would truly solve the problem.

You completely ignored that I included that the BCS only brought a guarantee that the #1 and #e “RANKED” teams will play each other in a post season bowl. Your whole counter-point is futile by ignoring that acknowledgment. Also you failed to address the “whole season is a play-off myth” when a two loss L.S.U team made it into the championship ahead of other one loss teams.

Really..based on what game? I don’t believe T.c.U got a chance to play any of these teams…however considering T.C.U defeated Wisconsin and Wisconsin trashed Ohio State and Ohio State defeated Arkansas who defeated Alabama who only lost by a point to Auburn via 3 fumbles in the redzone I see no indication T.C.U is incapable of playing any of those teams you listed.
Safe to say this season is a wash and we have an S.E.C champion that may be no better than the champion from little ole non-aq WAC.

Mountain West.

Your right…Mountain West…tx. I do get those conferences mixed up which is no accident considering ESPN and CBS largely focus all of its attention on its biggest money market in the S.E.C Never thought ESPN would eventually conduct its programming and commentary in the style of FOX News.

Arkansas didn’t beat Alabama this year, but South Carolina did and they lost to Kentucky. Are you saying that Kentucky was as good as Auburn too?

Your right that’s the game I was thinking of…get a few of those no-fense in sight S.E.C affairs jumbled up…however considering Kentucky only lost to Auburn 37-34 perhaps Kentucky is as about as good. And consider the 3rd place finisher from the Big East defeated Kentucky hence perhaps they are better than both representatives in the S.E.C championship game? It just all shows that a regular season can be dissected a million ways and no clear answer can match the result of actual game. T.C.U is co-national Champ in my opinion and Auburn cannot call itself the best team in the nation with a straight face. Every sport on every level has some form of post season playoffs except major college football. How it can still be decided largely by voting like figure skating. See no reason why a top 4 or top 8 playoff is compatible with the post season bowls.

Oh please, Kentucky also lost to Ole Miss who lost to Vandy for Christ’s sake! I don’t disagree that a playoff would be ideal, but don’t use “Team X lost to Team Y who beat Team Z!” as your reasoning. Especially if you’re going to use 'Almost beat" or “Only lost by x points”. Because if we use that logic then:

TCU almost lost to Wisconsin who
Lost to Michigan ST who
Lost to Iowa who
Lost to Minnesota who
Lost to South Dakota who
Lost to Lamar
etc
etc.

As I posed this query in another thread:

What SEC Team will win the BCS Game next January? My guess is LSU.

Bama!

(Rank homerism? Sure!)
