Yeah, I kind of figured that the answer would be “probably not.” I think it would be cool, though.
I tried to configure the plug-in before I left the office today (I only have Audioscrobbler running at work), but I couldn’t even find the plug-in! Nothing in the Start menu or the iTunes app itself, and all I found in the iTunes > Plugins folder was a lonely .DLL file with Wednesday’s datestamp (so no recent info). I’ll try again on Monday.
Mine did the same thing for about a day. It’s actually logging the songs you’ve listened to when it can’t connect, and then it sends them all in one big packet. Trust the Audioscrobbler!
Also, once you’ve got a few hundred songs under your belt, use the last.fm player to listen to other people’s songs that are close to your tastes - they still go on your Audioscrobbler profile, even if you don’t own the songs. Biggest upside: instead of seeing a list of artists you might like, they just play them for you. You can “ban” songs you don’t like and theoretically, you will never hear that song again! …at least on the internet. You can also just listen to your own music – well, any of the songs that they’ve converted for streaming that are on your Audioscrobbler list – from anywhere with a high-speed connection and speakers.
Similarity between two bands is based on how many people listen to both of them. If there are many entries higher on the list, a fairly similar pair won’t show.
The people there probably have some clue. Might want to ask on their forums. Same goes to those having problems - the people there are far more able to troubleshoot this stuff.
Actually, as of (I believe) when they set up the second profile cluster (doubling the number of users they could comfortably support), they changed to a secret formula that places you in the update queue based on things like how many songs you’ve listened to since your last update, how many songs you’ve listened to altogether, time since your last update, length of time you’ve been a member, phase of the moon, style of shoe worn, and oddly enough, not whether or not you’ve donated money. How quickly it goes through the queue is highly variable; their hamsters don’t seem to be as consistent and disciplined as ours are.

It doesn’t register anything under 30 seconds. If your plugin did so, it’s not conforming to specs - though it would shock me, as I imagine that the submissions system rejects tracks that short on their end. So yes, and the irritation of grindcore fans has been noted. There are plans to fix that whole situation up in the future.
And you didn’t skew anyone’s stats but your own. You only get one “vote” in a group’s charts, whether for artists or groups, just as with the systemwide weekly charts. So listen all you like, we don’t care. Incidentally, you can go to your profile editor at http://www.last.fm/user/Jurph/editor (last.fm being Audioscrobbler’s sister site) and delete entire songs or artists from your history to cover up your shame at your musical taste.
Go to the profile editor, or remove the tags from those songs (it only submits mp3s with id3 tags), or move the things that fill you with deep shame to another directory and set your plugin not to submit things from that directory (also the solution if you have family members who also use the computer.)
No. And there’s some philosophical reason for it, mainly I think that it doesn’t represent your taste. Doesn’t count for their sister station, http://www.last.fm/, which theoretically plays you music it knows you’ll like based upon your audioscrobbler profile.
I was auditioning new audioplayers for my PC when I stumbled across MusikCube (very cool) that has a plugin for audioscrobbler (also very cool). It rang a bell so I ran a search here on the SDMB and turned up this thread.
I know I’m late to the party but I had to join the SDMB group (username GCHodge) and bump this thread for those poor souls who have yet to discover the joys of scrobbling.
Is anyone else in the SDMB group using last.fm now?
If you aren’t, here’s the deal:
Your music tastes noted in audioscrobbler
???
last.fm lets you stream a personal radio station of stuff that you and your musical ‘neighbors’ like.
Great, huh? I’ve gotten into the habit of listening to it at work a lot. It’s peachy.
Except for today. Last.fm thinks I suck today. My profile radio has been CRAP all day - hip hop I’ve never heard of followed by the Carpenters followed by actual streams of hornets that come out of the speakers and attack my precious ear canals. It just tried to throw some Linkin Park in there, for pity’s sake! I’m wearing out the ban button here. Why does it suddenly think I have no taste?
Your musical neighborhood seems to be based more on what you’ve listened to recently than your lifetime listening history. So if you’ve been listening to unusual things recently, that could explain it.
Alternatively, there could be a bug in their neighborhood calculations.
Wow, I’ve been a member of last.fm for almost 2 weeks and was completely unaware that there was an SDMB group (must have missed this thread last time around).
I just joined up with the group. I’m ShadowKat on there. I will start skewing your charts shortly, I’m sure.
Not unless things have changed drastically. It’s based upon your whole listening history, or at least it certainly used to be. I know there’s a new neighbor calculation method, but as far as I know it’s like this: your neighbors are based on those with the same artists in their lists, with each musician weighted in the calculation based on their frequency on the whole system. That way, for instance, Radiohead won’t have a huge impact on your neighbors, since a huge proportion of Audioscrobbler users listen to them and therefore they don’t prove much about your musical taste.
So it might be the case that your neighbors are unduly influenced by some obscure artist you haven’t listened to much. Or maybe they just suck. A lot of people are complaining about the new neighbor calculation system, but it’s been great to me - it’s found a ton of people who have pretty similar listening habits to mine.
Incidentally, getting rid of the swarms of hornets that stream out of your speakers and attack your ears is a special feature reserved for folks who donate to the site.
