I have a bit of a thing for the lady rockers, obviously. And you?
We have a SDMB group on there. Alas, Last is blocked from work and I can’t remember the link - but it’s one of my groups if you take a look at my profile http://www.last.fm/user/tarzybug
Thanks, cazzle. I actually realized right after posting that there was probably an SDMB community but hadn’t thought to check before now as I’m still pretty new, having only joined a month ago.
I’d missed out on last.fm before now. Downloaded the software, and this looks like fun.
My results are going to be pretty skewed for a while. I just bought a new computer, and in so doing, I am undergoing ripping all my CDs to the computer, and rating all the songs in WMP. So, by and large, I’m playing all tracks on an album, even when I don’t like the songs so much, just to remind myself a bit. Same for playing entire albums (or artists) that I don’t normally listen to, but want to rip then rate so I can start getting some smart playlists going through WMP.
I had to scratch my old name last year when the site upgraded, something wonky happened and I was never able to get the account going again. Lost a couple of years worth of scrobbling, but this one’s got about a year’s worth now.
Just the other day I was wondering to myself if there was a topic here about this. I love it and have gotten several of my friends addicted to it. A lot of my new music comes from the random mess that the site recommends. Anyway, I’m found here.
My overall top artists:

Kings of Convenience, The String Quartet, Jack Johnson, and (to a lesser degree) Bernard Fanning, Dido and Death Cab for Cutie, are over represented on my list because of my habit of queueing up a playlist of their songs to play while I’m sleeping and leaving it repeating all night.

My results are a little skewed on this, as, well, last.fm scrobbled anything that played while I uploaded music onto the hard drive. I like the newer version, which isn’t embedded into any of my music playing programs, and can be turned on or off as I please. Saves a bit of hassle, but sadly, you can tell which stuff I have the most music for… well, sort of. I have 120 tracks for Queen, several albums of Tom Waits, a few different ones for Iced Earth, The Cranberries, Bjork, and Marilyn Manson. I think the other ones are flukes based on the nature of iTunes’ shuffle function.
My weekly top artists:
1 Flogging Molly
2 Einstürzende Neubauten
3 The Gossip
4 Zulya
4 Eivor Palsdottir
4 Marta Gomez
4 Samite
4 Ace of Base
4 Beethova Obas
4 Nancy-Ajram
I haven’t been listening to a lot of music lately. 1. I’ve been sick. 2. I haven’t been home during the holidays. 3. The external hard drive that holds all my music electronically wasn’t connected to my computer.

Benny Goodman – Stompin’ at the Savoy

That seems to be a pretty good representation of my musical tastes and listening habits. I’ve been shifting more towards big band and away from mopey British groups in recent months, and my overall charts are starting to reflect that.

That’s what I loved about it for the first little while - its ability to track what I was listening to and show me how my tastes were evolving. I also dig the little feature that lets you tailor your recommendations by obscurity.
I’ve got myself setup, and I’ve asked to be a friend of everyone on this thread (I think) and thank you. I’ve been on it since the beginning of December, but have hardly used the service. Yesterday I realised that I should just let the last.fm application fire up whenever Winamp is running - all well and good.
Then I discovered that a lot off my stuff was generating errors at last.fm due to badly formed tags, so I downloaded Musicbrainz, and tagged everything I’ve got that is even remotely legit.
I’ve got two questions:
Is it worth my while just letting my music play for the next month or so (that’s what I’ve got) to build up a representative profile, or does it not matter,
does anyone know of a good ID3 tagging site for classical music. Musicbrainz is great for rock’n’pop but less so for earlier stuff;
is it worth paying for a personalised radio station?
Yes. Once you’ve got a few hundred tracks played, it can start building your neighbours list, and recommendations. Then you can use Neighbour and recommended radio to discover new artists. (My favourite part of the service.)
Play what you’re in the mood for when you’re in the mood for it. Make use of the tag feature, and within a few weeks (if you play music every day) it should be able to give you a reasonable profile. The longer you scrobble tracks, the more interesting your profile will be. Just don’t force it to think you’re listening to stuff you’re not, as that won’t be too accurate.
No clue on this one. I’ve got issues with some of my foreign stuff, but that’s an issue of not being able to find any info outside of the CD itself on the tracks.
I wouldn’t think so. I haven’t paid for one.
Also, top artists and top songs are updated weekly. Each week is marked, and then once you get over a month, they do stats based on monthly stuff as well. I haven’t been on long enough, but I’m sure yearly usage is also tracked. Just listen to music, let it scrobble, and in time you’ll see how it works.
