5 most played songs on your iPod?

or iTunes, or whatever you use to computify your music. If you sort by ‘Play Count’, what comes up on top? Inspired by First five songs on your iPod.

On mine -
Warm up - me (64)
Ventura Highway - America (24)
I am a Man of Constant Sorrow - The Soggy Bottom (Boys, from the ‘O Brother, Where art Thou?’ soundtrack (19)
Anniversary, from Letters to a Musical Friend - Buczinsky, Walter (19)
Why I like Brahms, from Letters to a Musical Friend - Buczinsky, Walter (18)

So mine is really skewed a) because just about anything in double digits is something I’ve had to lift/learn/work on/play or sing along with and b) because I had a complete failure of the hard drive in early Jan., and so this list only covers this year.

So, I’m curious what other Dopers have listened to most.

  1. [Tool](http://www.last.fm/music/Tool) – [The Pot](http://www.last.fm/music/Tool/_/The+Pot) -- 46 Plays

                             5. [O.A.R.](http://www.last.fm/music/O.A.R.) – [Heard the World](http://www.last.fm/music/O.A.R./_/Heard+the+World) -- 41 Plays

This is from my Shuffle, which is what’s plugged in right now.

Please do not be alarmed.

  1. “No Tengo Dinero” by Los Umbrellos
  2. “The Stand” by the Alarm
  3. “Last One to Die” by Rancid
  4. “X Gonna Give it to Ya” by DMX
  5. “Don’t Want to Fall in Love” by Jane Child

Yes, I have strange taste. Don’t we all?

It looks like the list is the same for my iPod and for iTunes. Seems they sync up the play counts so I don’t get to see my differential listening habits.

  1. “Leeds United” by Amanda Palmer–46 plays
  2. Most of the album In Rainbows by Radiohead–kinda tied* for 23-28 plays
  3. “Super Sexy Woman” by Sufjan Stevens–28 plays
  4. “Us” by Regina Spektor–26 plays
  5. “Fake Palindromes” by Andrew Bird–23 plays

*I don’t want my top 5 to be obliterated by a bunch of songs that I usually listened to as a complete album, so I cheated. Besides, the last time I played them was June of last year, so I don’t even feel bad about it.

Grouper - When We Fall (63)

The War On Drugs - Taking The Farm (60)

Of Montreal - Wicked Wisdom (60)

The Walkmen - On The Water (59)

Beach House - Wedding Bell (55)

Through the Fire and Flames - Dragonforce
Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing - Buffalo Springfield
Like A Hurricane - Neil Young
My Back Pages - Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert
Pancho & Lefty - Emmylou Harris

Whisky Train - Procol Harum
Sister Disco - The Who
Joke Shop Man - Bonzo Dog Band
Green Shirt - Elvis Costello
Pretty Words - Elvis Costello

Selection is random; I do most of my iPod listening in shuffle mode.

Tough one man. I’ll bump it up to top 10 songs, but without a specific order. All I know is that I listen to these songs a lot.

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
Clint East Wood by Gorillaz
Don’t Look back in Anger by Oasis
**The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix) **- Nathan Fake
I Am The Walrus - The Beatles
River (Robert Babicz Remix) by Phonique
Baile Me by Gipsy Kings
Grita by Jarabe de Palo
Waiting in Vain by Bob Marley
Black Dog by Led Zeppelin

All of my counts are really, really low. I don’t know why that is; I know I have listened to these songs more than what’s listed. And there are a shit load of songs that I apparently never have listened to, although I have. Does it not count when you listen via shuffle? That’s what I generally do. Anyhow…top ten …

Army Dreamers- Kate Bush
Paralyzed- Elf Power
Walk Don’t Run- The Ventures
World Where You Live- Crowded House
Atom Tan- The Clash
There is a Mountain- Donovan
Arthur- The Kinks
Sally MacLennane- The Pogues
One Beat- Sleater-Kinney
Here Comes My Baby- The Tremeloes (really?)

iPod:
The Egg- 1776
If I Apologised- Mirrormask soundtrack
The Village Green Preservation Society- Kinks
Zero Friction- The Presidents of the United States of America
Not About You- Jonathan Coulton

iTunes:
If I Apologised- Mirrormask
The Egg- 1776
Zydrate Anatomy- Repo! The Genetic Opera
The Village Green Preservation Society- Kinks
He Plays the Violin- 1776

Jane says - Janes Addiction
Velvet Waltz - Built to Spill
Vicarious Atonement - Mars Volta
Shed so many tears - Tupac
The Past and Pending - The Shins

Ida Red
(Asleep At the Wheel)
Shaving Cream
(Gruesome Three)
Ebay (Parody of “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys)
(“Weird Al”)
You Know My Name
(Beatles)
Plastic Jesus
(Paul Newman vocal) (Cool Hand Luke, Original Soundtrack Recording)

Unsurprisingly, 4 out of the top 6 played tracks are on my workout playlist.

Fall Out Boy “Dance, Dance” 91 plays
The Underwater “First Shot” 74 plays
Finger Eleven “Falling on” 50 plays/“Paralyzer” 49 plays
Make Believe “Say What You Mean” 44 plays
Black Lab “She Loves Me” 44 plays

The big draw back to the play count on Music Match is that it only counts songs once you’ve officially added the track to the library. I add every new track for the month on the same day, so songs like “Sour Cherry” by The Kills that I’ve already listened to 30 times this month won’t reflect having been played at all until the beginning of July.

I’ll use my Rhapsody Library play count instead - 11,336 tracks - plays on full random 99.9% of the time

Would That I Were - Clifton Paisley
Legal in Suarez - In Tents
Gaze Upon This Wrinkled Visage - The Scrotes

Coldplay - Fix You - 663

U2 - Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (The Temple Bar Mix) - 640

U2 - Running to Stand Still / Dirty Old Town (Live at Point Depot, Dublin, 31 Dec '89) - 619

David Usher - The Music - 608

U2 - I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (Live at Point Depot, Dublin, 31 Dec '89) - 595

These five songs are all part of a few playlists that I alternate between.

Also eliminating matches from the same album:

Five Years Time, Noah and the Whale, 80
London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines, Panic! at the Disco, 44
Everybody’s Coming to the Zoo, Lunch Money, 42
The Margretville Dance, The Prize Fighter Inferno, 36
Lounge (closing time), Modest Mouse, 34

Five Years Time I had on autorepeat for awhile. Ana Ng by TMBG was my autorepeat song a while before I got this computer or that would probably be in the hundreds.

“Drunken Sailor” performed by The Fenians

“My Immortal” performed by Evanescence (really a tie with “Bring Me To Life”)

“You Know That I’m No Good” performed by Amy Winehouse

“Galway Girl” performed by The Fenians

“Haunted” performed by Shane MacGowan and Sinead O’Connor

Well, this is a little embarrassing (and inevitable). Please keep in mind that I got my current iPod about a week after this season of American Idol started. And I use it almost exclusively on my subway commute, and at least half that time I’m listening to podcasts and not music at all, so it’s not like I’m listening to this sort of thing all day long, every day. Okay? Okay?!?!

  2. as #5 above
  3. Adam Lambert: Born to be Wild (Studio version)
  4. Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack: O…Saya
  5. Adam Lambert: Whole Lotta Love (Studio version)

Sigh. I am SO busted.

Australia - The Shins
Spilt Needles - The Shins
Endlessly - Muse
A Comet Appears - The Shins
Phantom Limb - The Shins

In contrast, my Last.FM top 5 looks like this:
Australia - The Shins
Red Rabbits - The Shins
Rearviewmirror - Pearl Jam
I Will Follow You Into The Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
Spilt Needles - The Shins

Ha! I guess that’s not as much of a contrast as it used to be. I really must start branching out a bit more.

ETA: Albums! Last.FM reports my top 5 albums are:
Wincing The Night Away - The Shins (no surprises there)
Tea and Sympathy - Bernard Fanning
OK Computer - Radiohead
X&Y - Coldplay
Absolution - Muse
Now that’s a little more variety!
