This was a toss up between GQ and IMHO, but I thought this is the better fit.
I’m thinking about doing a type of treasure hunt for my daughter using the iPad2 we have. I know there are AR programs that let will scan a QR code, and then display a picture, video, text, or something else on the screen. But I can’t find one that lets you create your own database of QR codes, or even one that has an existing database of images/codes to use. Since I haven’t hacked my iPad, does anyone know of an app or app/software combination that would let me do something like this? So the kids can walk around the house, and when they scan a QR code, see a piece of treasure, or a spider or something?
There are tons and tons of free applications and websites to create QR codes. You can then print the codes out. The trick is the app to pull up pictures of treasure or spiders. I would say the easiest way to do this is find the pictures online. Then use something like http://createqrcode.appspot.com/
to create QR codes with the url you want. Just paste the url of the picture into the above website and it creates the QR code and lets you choose the physical size so it should be good for making codes to stick around the house.
Wikipedia is a good source for pictures as you can get links to just the picture, for example treasure.
Ok, but does that mean the iPad needs to stay connected to the internet? I only have the Wi-Fi iPad, and while that will give me some range it’ll be a pretty short treasure hunt.
My suggestion of using URL for pictures on the internet assumes an internet connection. You might be able to put the pictures and videos on the ipad an have the qr code point to those files. I don’t own an Ipad so I don’t know how to do that.
