Aussies: What's a "comptometrist"?

Reading this story:

came across an unknown occupation:

Any help?

Well, in the States during WWII, my Mom was a comptometrist. In the days prior to calculators, large companies hired people to run adding machines all day checking the figures that would be entered in the General Ledger. The adding machines were called comptometers.

I don’t know that the word was used identically, in Australia, but Mrs. Gordon’s surgery would have occurrd in the same pre-computer era.

Well, unless you specifically want it from the land of Oz.

US Dept of Labor job descriptions link that job title to this page:

“BILLING, POSTING, AND CALCULATING MACHINE OPERATORS”

cool. Thanks. My Yahoo search only turned up 10 hits, none of which looked very useful.
