Kidman’s response: ASH Australia is absolutely right. Smoking addictive substances is a bad idea, especially when there are so many wonderful non-addictive drugs out there to smoke instead. And kids, if you work hard, you can make enough money to buy them!
A Canadian study recently surveyed teens and 20-somethings on their favourite movie stars, and the more the movie star had had screen parts that included smoking, the more likely the fan was to be a smoker (up to 3 times the national average for their age group). Does product placement really mean anything to anyone? The products’ owners do.
On another tangent, Our Nic has been on the cover of the top 4 women’s weekly mags that are displayed at supermarket checkouts, I would estimate, 2 out of 3 weeks, ever since she got nominated for the Oscar in January. If it’s not bitch-slapping Pene Cruz, it’s juggling her two kids on her hips on a quick trip to Bondi Beach, or her bemoaning her lack of a sex life in an exclusive interview, and I think all of us down under are getting a bit sick of her ubiquity.
The only relief was the 8 weeks straight of all the details of Our Russell’s wedding.
Nicole Kidman is not a role model. She’s an actress.
Role models are people like, oh, Margaret Thatcher. Mother Teresa. Sally Ride. People who actually DO something with their lives and improve the world because of it.
I have no problem with NK but all she does is stand in front of a camera and recite lines.
She needs to tell Oz to kiss her bum, IMHO.
Are you kidding me?
You said it! People need to grow up (I seem to say that on a lot of my posts  ). Are kids/ young people really such sheep that they will copy everything a movie star does? Give them a little credit for some intelligence. And if they are sheep - well then surely it’s their parents responsibility to bring them up so they’re more confident and independent minded.
Sometimes I despair of the things people get worked up about…
Hey, Thatcher was the Prime Minister. What have you done lately that I should look up to you instead?
I agree that it’s ridiculous to ask her to not smoke in public, they should be asking her not to act in public…she’s bad.
So… are you agreeing that she should be chastised for engaging in a legal act in public?
It’s not like kids are unaware of the dangers of smoking. The truth.com tyrants are in their faces 23 hours of the day.
