Here in the US, Carhartt and Dickies are a couple of the more popular brands of workwear. Are there any uniquely Australian brands? Google has been failing me - maybe “workwear” or “carpenter pants” are idiomatically wrong terms? I’ve been finding sites full of Dickies, CAT, and similar American brands, but I’m looking for the Australian equivalent to Carhartt.
There’s lots of Australian workwear brands. To name but a few:
Workwear is mostly marketed to actual workers, not to a leisure market, and is mostly sold in specialist stores, not general clothing stores, though the mass-market department stores do carry some. A Google search for workwear, conducted in Australia, will mostly yield hits pointing to workwear retailers rather than to specific workwear brands.
Hi-vis (especially orange) vests and shirts have managed to wangle their way into the general market. There was a funny (I think Korean) tourist here recently who fell in love with them, but my youtube and googlefu is failing me. Of course, they’re not a particular brand anymore.
But yeah, first thing that came to my mind was King Gee. Oh, and Blundstone back in the days before they were appropriated by middle-class students at university.
I wonder why that is. Here, there’s almost as many office workers wearing Carhartt (especially jackets and beanies) as there are actual tradespeople wearing the brand. No idea if that’s true across the US or if it’s unique to the Northern California / San Francisco area.
And thanks for names/links.
I recently picked one up for wearing to the office so that, “I feel like I have a real job.” It wasn’t eagerly copied by others though like when I started wearing a flanno.
Adam Savage loves his Blundstone boots.
I’m sure it’s moved into a more fashion lineup based on the photos, but I think Driza-Bone still is top notch gear for riding in the bush.
