Australia's Next Top Model Winner Is...Oops

Here is what will surely be remembered as a classic video clip.

What would happen if, for instance, there was a slight glitch when announcing the winner of a live, televised talent competition?

Here is the video clip.

Wow - that’s a pretty good video of what NOT to do as a live host! (But it sounds like it wasn’t the hosts’ fault - she was fed the wrong name.) The poor girls, and the poor host - I would be mortified to tell the wrong person they won.

This is why I hate live TV. Mistakes like that are unacceptable for expensive broadcast television. I remember a similar thing happened for the Miss Universe New Zealand contest, sometime in the early 90s. Ridiculously embarrassing for everyone involved.

It’s also a good reason to stop having audiences choose winners, because in my opinion it renders the whole idea of a “talent” competition meaningless if it comes down to a popularity contest, with a bunch of catty teenagers voting for who’s the least un-hot.

Seriously excruciating cringe. It’s being replayed to death on news shows and the like here. But I thought the girl who first won then lost was pretty gracious about it all, trying to tell Sarah Murdoch (who is Rupert’s daughter in law) it’s all right and make her feel better.

I suspect it was staged in order to get more press - how much airplay is this getting compared to just a straight announcement of the winner. It being be mis-fed to Sarah incorrectly seems really unlikely.

Then again, she is one of the Exec Producers and it would be out of character for her to approve a stunt like that, so perhaps it was real.

She doesn’t strike me as someone who could act that well. They all handled it pretty well after the fact but it’s very unprofessional that it happened at all.
