Autistic Basketball Player Movie?

This is more a GQ than something MPSIMS, but I suspect the answer is something that the MPSIMS crew is more likely to have the answer to.

Some months back, there was a feelgood news story about an autistic boy who had gone out for the basketball team at his school, become team manager, and was put in as a player in a late-season game where “it didn’t matter” – and wowed everyone with his playing once he got the chance.

According to my wife, there were proposals to make a movie based on a fictionalization of that story. But she’s never heard any follow-up on them.

Does anyone know what happened in relation to those plans, or any followup on the boy after his 15 minutes of fame?

It sounds like a Disney wet dream, but I haven’t heard anything yet.

That kid is quite a young man.

His name is Jason McElwain, and he performed his heroics for Greece (NY) Athena High School. He’s working on his GED, and is employed at a grocery store. This page, which claims that “Columbia Pictures bought the rights to his story, and Magic Johnson is producing a movie about his life”, features a link to the video.
