Auto Insurance...

How much does car insurance go up when there’s an accident? I realize this is not an exact science, but I’m l;ooking for a guesstimation on how the industry views things.

Is expecting it to double reasonable?

Hi Satan,
I can’t say for sure, but I believe my auto insurance, (State Farm), added ten percent to my premium after my last accident, and that went away after three years of accident free driving. The accident was a minor fender-bender about 5 years ago and was totally my fault, though I don’t know if that makes any difference in the increase.

I think it does make a difference from what i can tell…

The last time I made a claim with Allstate for a parking lot accident that was my fault my agent explained that I could have totalled my car and my rates would not have gone up. The damage to the other car was above a low threshold so my rated went up for three years.

They place a surcharge of about 30-40% on collision, if you carry collision coverage. Then they place another percentage on your liability coverage, but not until your next renewal. Whatever coverages you buy are itemized, along with prices, on your renewal. If you only carry liability coverage, the increase shouldn’t be too steep. Don’t be afraid to call your agent and ask, after all, he’s not Satan.

I have a lein on the car, hence I have full insurance.

I called. They said soemthing about three points being added on. Total damages to both cars comes to over five grand.

I believe it will double. We will see…

I recently moved to North Carolina and I am pretty sure that your insurance can go up 25% for each point added to your license. I saw this on some literature a co-worker had after going to court for a speeding ticket. I guess it could be different for every state. I never heard of a point system until I moved here.

Dude,

If this is simply an intellectual exercise, head over to http://www.progressive.com and ask for 2 quotes, one with an accident.

Sounds like you are in a sub-standard rated structure to begin with. In TX, we have 3 rating stuctures. Sub-standard, standard and perferred. Sub-standard is basically high risk. You can be rated sub-std. just for not having prior insurance, and of course for having tickets and/or accidents and other various reasons. If they are “dipping” you for 3 points, that’s alot. Here it’s 2 points per at fault accidents and 1 for traffic tickets. That is in a sub-rated structure. It’s only 1 in the other 2 classes and usually none for 1 ticket. Your agent can tell you exactly what you will be paying come renewal, he is probably just lazy and needs you to prompt him to work for you. Be careful if you shop with points on you and always disclose all driving info. They’ll find out anyway.

Nice try though… God I hate this state… :frowning:
