is it water pressure alone that causes automatic sprinklers to pop up? if so, how much weight would i have to apply to keep one down?
there’s one at my apartment complex that sprays right on my bedroom window every other night at 4:20am and it always wakes me up.
management has failed to act on my maintenance request and it’s time to take matters into my own hands.
Yep, it’s just water pressure that pops them up. With that same pressure, they operate their back-and-forth mechanism.
A good 5-10 lb weight oughta keep it down. But that’d be destructive, since the lawn near your window would brown up and die.
If you’re tired of waiting for your maintenance man, you can take matters into your own hands. If you go to the sprinkler and pull it up, there should be two clamps/clips on the shaft of the sprinkler, below the mechanism. If you can rotate them, you can adjust the angle at which it changes direction. It’s easier to do when the water is on, so you can see your changes immediately. Without the water on, it will probably take 1-3 tries to get the adjustments right.
Oh come on…there is an easy remedy to this problem. If you simply open your window each night before you go to bed then the sound of the sprinkler hitting the glass will not wake you up.
Just look at the top of the sprinker you can tell what direction its pointing. Do it during the day when you have light. Twist it a little bit to one side, itll turn, it doesn’t have to be up at the time but that makes it easier.
Some have a screw slot on the top, with that you can tighten it down so very little or no water comes out.
handy - the sprinkler in question is more like the one you described, although i wish i’d read your thread earlier. as soon as the water hit my window this morning, i snapped out of bed and went outside with a flashlight. it is now watering the parking lot instead of my window. i’ll have to check out that screw slot so management doesn’t hit me with a charge for dead grass. ahhh, peaceful slumber.
Can you keep us up to date with what happens when they finally come round (probably later today, since you’ve just fixed the problem yourself) & try to charge you for calling them out when there’s nothing wrong? Pretty please?
Best way to make it rain - water the garden, best way to make train arrive - empty bags on platform looking for something, best way to make repairman… you get the picture!
since you asked so nicely, fierra…
i spoke to the manager regarding an unrelated issue about an hour ago and she brought up the sprinkler thing. she started blathering about how the maintenance guy was supposed to show the sprinkler guys where the problem was and then the maintenance guy left unexpectedly, yada, yada, yada. i told her ‘the sprinkler is no longer an issue’. she said ‘oh, why? did you move to the other room?’ i said ‘no, i went outside last night and turned it so it’s not hitting my window anymore’. suddenly she was all apologetic and saying ‘oh i told the guy to do that’ and ‘maybe i’ll pay you to be my maintenance guy’, etc., etc… if nothing else, maybe this will earn me some decent maintenance response credit. we’ll see.
