Installation of hand controls[brake and accelerator] in my area runs at the $850 level.
How does this compare with other areas?
Any body out there with some expertise on this?

Let me check with my folks this evening. They had hand controls installed in a motorhome last year.
I won’t offer myself as an expert but the hand controls I’ve seen are pretty simple. What do you want to know besides cost?
I would also like to know how they like the controls and if they have any hints about their usage?
I’m in my eighties----------trying to get all the freeadvice I can get.
I had them installed in a new car a couple of months ago, they cost me $730 in FL. That included a steering wheel spinner, which I’d highly recommend. It’s hard to do a sharp turn with only one hand on the wheel otherwise (the other hand is on the controls).
I’ve been using hand controls for about 7 years, it’s not really a matter of liking them or not, for me they’re a necessity and now second nature.
Practice with them for a while somewhere there’s no traffic, it’s easy to get confused at first. Leave yourself plenty of stopping room pulling up to a light or stop sign (and don’t tailgate) until you get used to them; you can find yourself hitting the gas when you meant to brake.
I’ve never seen such hand controls. What are they like?
Aren’t those ‘steering wheel spinners’ illegal? Probably not everywhere, but I believe they may be prohibited in NJ.
Why? Exactly because you can turn the steering wheel very fast, resulting in loss of control and stability.
Sorry for hijack, good luck getting your hand controls installed, Ezstrete.

Here’s what I have. As to the spinner, I only know they are legal in CA and FL. I am much safer with it than without. If I were to turn a corner without one, either I would have to remove my hand from the gas/brake to turn the wheel, or let go of the wheel to reposition my hand. Neither is safe. Try turning using only one hand, it’s not easy.

gah, sorry bout that.
The legality for steering wheel spinners varies from state-to-state. I know that they are illegal in TN, unless you can provide proof of needing them for medical reasons. In my conversations with police, even if such things are illegal in your state, unless you’re a real jerk to the cop, he’s not going to do anything about it.
My dad is paralyzed from mid chest down so the hand controls are for him. The setup is pretty simple a single lever on the left side of the steering column controls throttle and brake. I’ve used it a couple of times on the van and iirc the lever rotates counter clockwise to increase throttle and toward the floor for brake. The motorhome has a more sophisicated setup that releases the throttle when you apply brake. Both vehicles have a spinner knob which he needed to pass the driver’s test for his endorsement so I presume they are legal in Arizona. I didn’t get a chance to call them tonight but will find the conversion cost for you.
To one and all-----thank you--------I’ll be taking the plunge soon.
The total cost for me in Georgia ran about $500, but that was several years ago. They’re surprisingly expensive, but very much worth it.
I never heard that the spinner knobs are illegal. After a day and a half I had recently driving a rental car that did not have one (turns out I had to specify it when I made the reservation…nobody mentioned that, I assumed the knob was included) I can safely say that the knob is critical for me. I felt VERY unsafe without it, and it’s a good thing I didn’t have to park in a narrow space. I had to haul my butt back down to near the airport to get one installed, and I was fine after that.
If a cop harasses me about the knob, too damn bad. I can’t drive without it! Besides, I do not exactly have a sports car. It’s a 1997 Saturn. I love my car, but it’s not a performance vehicle, nor am I likely to pull stupid stunts in it…
Please don’t tailgate even when you do get used to them!
From what the installer tells me the spinner is mandatory as part of the installation package in Ohio.
The cost ,apparently, is prortionate to the number of retirees/handicapees in a given location.
The demand creates competition among installers.
But Here in Ohio, where a lot of the sunbelt retirees come from, the local installer is the only game in town.
And “ya gotta dance with the one what brung ya”.
Or so it seems!
Once again,Many thanks to all respondents.
