Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024 Netflix series)

The first season is eight episodes and premieres on Netflix Thursday February 22nd 2024.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

This was only barely on my radar, but it looks legit! The characters look great, the bending looks great, the tone seems right. This could go a long way towards redeeming (redeeming? Is that the word I’m looking for?) M. Night Shyamalan’s not-so-well-received 2010 film. (Erasing, that might be the right word.)

The worst I can say is that the CGI’s a bit dodgy at this point, but it’s early days, and at $15m per episode, I’d rather they spent it on actors and sets - and writing, for god’s sake, writing! - than in making Appa’s fur look realistic.

Crossing my fingers that they can pull this off. It’s definitely on my radar now!

I’ve got no plans to watch the show (after all, I’ve already seen it) but it does look much better this time around.

Wow, it looks great. Cool to see Omashu, the Kyoshi Warriors, the “boy in the iceberg” scene, Zuko and Bad Dad. Looks like Aang is in the burned forest and Crescent Island from the mid 1st season two-parter where he meets Roku and Heybot.

Yeah, the bison and lemur look pretty dicey still, but there’s time.

I’m in!!

So, is this just a live action remake of the animated series (which I really liked)?

That scene of Zuko and Iroh on the lonely forest road tells me they’ll meet the Rough Rinos (“a very capable singing group” - Iroh).

That’s my understanding, yes.

Based on the stills I’ve seen, Daniel Dae Kim is an absolutely spot-on Ozai.

Am I the only one to notice that making a remake of an existing show is one way to get around the writers’ strike?

This went into production a long, long time ago.

Yes, it had the original creators on board and then they quit when they realized Netflix had a different vision than them. I’m not sure if this will be:

  • good
  • necessary

I mean, neat? I don’t really need a live action version of the great cartoon series.

If the originators were involved with Korra on any level, I won’t miss them.

I guess. I really enjoyed Korra for the most part.

Is it? I think they still have to hire writers. Besides, they’ve already got a way around the strikes: foreign content. Squid Games season 2 is still coming, after all.

It comes out the day before my birthday. Happy Cake Day to me!

Official trailer:

CGI’s looking much better. The characters seem true to form. One month until release…

wow, that looks great. They hit all the high points. Boy in the iceberg, siege off the north, Blue Spirit, shirshu and Jade, Zuko getting his scar, Azula firing an exploding arrow (?), the Rough Riders, looks like southern air temple, Kyoshi Warriors, Momo, Omashu, earthbenders, Jet, I’m sure there’s more.

Surprised we didn’t see Crescent Island where Aang meets Roku and gets the exposition for the rest of the show. I guess that’s cuttable - Roku can just appear to Aang in a vision or something. But we need “you must stop the Firelord before summer’s end” speech somewhere.

Finished watching episode 1. I’m satisfied so far. They toned down Sokka’s comedic relief which is nice but kept just enough.
Thought maybe some of the acting was a little subpar but I think it was more of just awkward dialog they were made to say.
Interesting choice of starting out with the fire nation initiating the war and the air bender purge rather than the discovery of frozen Aang.
Almost felt like they could have stuck that at the beginning of Ep.2

OMG it’s out and I didn’t notice? Lunges for TV remote. Trips painfully over coffee table, faceplants.

Will watch immediately.

Halfway through ep 1. It’s not very good.

I’ve finished episode 1. It was pretty dull, mostly?

I hope we at least get a guest appearance from Mike Abbages.

(Saw that on a Facebook AI group earlier tonight.)
