Maybe they’re setting us up for a double twist with Tarlock. After all, his style didn’t look like Amon’s at all, and Amon didn’t lose to Korra, the last time they met. If all Amon wanted was to get Korra in a van, I think he could have subdued her pretty easily.
Okay, that picked up the pace. Tarlock mostly resolved awfully fast.* Character dynamics getting a bit more interesting. Heck even the jokes worked better this time (the zipper bit was clever).
*It is hinted that he had some connection with Amon in that it had been his plan to rule Republic City by coming to its rescue. So one infers that he knew of the forthcoming threat of Equalism and likely of Amon, even if he (and we) have no understanding of what sort of power he possesses that he can resist bloodbending … Aang needed to go Avatar to overcome it.
You know, something I’ve noticed over the last two or three episodes—and really seems apparent, since the season finale itself is apparently scheduled for later this month—is that the story suddenly seemed rushed, like the writers got told midway through the season that the number of episodes greenlit had been cut from 20 to 12, and they needed to compress the arc.
Up till then, it had been building more slowly, and ominously—verynoirish, actually. You know that most of the supporting characters are up to no good, but the question is what kind of agenda are they hiding, and who’s side are they in it for?
(It suddenly seems amazingly appropriate Tenzin looked so much like Batman when he flew in on the glider-staff in the night, awhile back.)
That was one of the best bits of TV in a while, in fact this show is easily the best show running now. Even if I wonder WTF it is doing on Nick, the show bores my son and I think it would be better placed on Adult Swim.
I can’t help but think some of those who don’t like the show or are dissapointed with it had unrealistic expectations, I’m struggling to find flaws in the show.
Not a bad ep. at all this week.
(SPOILERS)
OK, so Tarlock isn’t Amon, but that was becoming clear last week, as Tabby_cat had pointed out.
I’m starting to lean in the direction of Amon being a spirit, because I can’t think of anything else that can explain his being immune* to blood-bending, short of a suit made of unobtainium, or similar bendo-babble. But if Tarlock can bloodbend sans full moon, I guess anything is possible, bendo-babble-wise. (*or almost immune; he was clearly affected for a moment, but shrugged it off.)
It’s cool that Korra is finally getting in touch with her inner Avatar. Maybe we’ll see her eyes get glowy sometime later, probably next season, but perhaps not until the final ep. It was fun seeing Aang hulk out as an adult, and Toph still being a smart-ass to him.
Apparently Mako is going to discover new feelings for Korra. Sigh, so predictable. Maybe the writers will have him love her like a sister/comrade/whatever, but I’m not betting on it.
And apparently Korra loses her bending in the finale, but probably in a fixable way, as someone else in this thread suggested.
And, yes, the zipper joke was pretty funny.
I have to admit, I’m irritated every time there’s a council scene - WTF kind of council acts like that? And a kid busting in on a executive meeting???
Anyway. The last episode had some action, resolving Tarlock, but noting about the equalists… I wonder what’s up with Amon.
You must be viewing episode 8. Episode 9 aired yesterday, there was plenty of Tarlock and Amon to be had. Last I looked, Nick.com still hadn’t posted ep. 9, I found it here. (Second video from the top; you can ignore any warning you see about turning off ad-blockers.)
The promo for the season? finale looks interesting, Sato is out of prison somehow and giving a speech at a equalist rally. Aang’s statue has a Amon mask on its face and the equalists are attacking in planes and ships?(or are those fire nation ships?) and Amon has some kind of mass spirit bending thing going on which Korra breaks up and then he has his hand on her head. :rolleyes:I don’t know why they keep putting this in promos, Amon has had what four chances to spirit bend her? It is clear he needs her.
Assuming they get the second season it looks like the equalists take Republic city, it would be interesting if the second season has Korra traveling and building up a army to retake it.
Huh, you saw more in that preview than I did. I was watching it in less-than-HD on some low quality cite (see my link above to Tabby_Cat), and the video on Nick.com (that they finally posted, grrr) doesn’t have next week’s preview. So I’m not sure what to think from my low-quality viewing of that clip from the finale.
But, yeah – two (by my count) chances for Amon to take away Korra’s bending, and this is the third. I’m going with other posters who guessed that Amon actually does take it away this time, which next season starts a search for What To Do About That, probably involving all that spiritual stuff Korra is now getting in touch with. This notion seems plausible to me because it matches up pretty nicely with how the writers positioned the end of A:TLAB season 2, when the Earth Kingdom Fell, and it seemed the Good Guys were Screwed. The writers will (IMHO) seek that same feeling of All Is Lost at the end of this season, and Korra losing her bending fits that pattern nicely.
I just wanted to respond to this a little belatedly, I hope you don’t mind, Miller:
Aang’s spirit-bending of Yakone looked exactly like what Amon has been doing. Not that it’s conclusive that Amon is or isn’t a spirit/energy bender, but evidence to the contrary is slim.
Also I thought it was interesting that that during the flashback trial they made a point of mentioning how sometimes certain people just figure out how to do something people haven’t done before, ie metal bending or Blood-Bending on a weekday.
Possibly reinforcing the theory that Amon is legit and not just an elaborate scam. On the other hand it could be just building up the proof so the “hoax” exposure is more dramatic.
Re season finale:
She’s my hero too!
Not quite sure where they are going next year but these last two eps have this show really hitting its stride.
Wow.
That wasn’t the season finale. Wikipedia claims 12 episodes this season, and that was #10. 11 & 12 are the finale.
Glad to have made that mistake.
How did Sato get out of the pokey? Did I miss something or is he just all of a sudden on the bridge of the airship talking to Amon?
Loved the episode BTW, I take back all the complaints I had about filler early in the season. I think if I had been watching the first season back to back it would not even be noticed.
Does anyone else find it strange how many waterbenders there are in Republic city? At the end of the first show the southern water tribe had two living benders(and Hama was insane and ancient) and the northern water tribe was small and split by sex. Come to this series and waterbenders are as common as earth and fire it seems. Yakone had to have been alive and active during the first show.
Don’t forget the swamp folk.
Huh, I think that was Zuko’s voice actor, Dante Bosco, at the very end of Ep 10 as General Iroh. He doesn’t seem to be credited, but he’s in IMDB’s credit list for the next episode (#11), so I’m thinking that must have been his voice in this episode as well.
So, hmm, “Iroh”… I thought Uncle Iroh’s only son died, so this Iroh seems unlikely to be related to Uncle. (And is “Iroh” even a family name? Come to think of it, did the Fire Nation even use surnames?) Is this Iroh perhaps Zuko + Mai’s grandson?
I took a minute to find the credits for this weeks episode (10) and Dante Bosco is credited as General Iroh.
Woot! Zuko is back!!
My assumption is that it’s Zuko’s son, named after his uncle.
Or grandson.
